Solar woes
To the editor: In a recent Enterprise we learned that one of Commissioner Melinda Lautner’s many objections to accepting the $1.5 million grant on offer to our county for the installation of solar panels is that the panels will be near a jail. “Concern about the proximity of the proposed solar array to the county jail,” arises in Ms Lautner’s mind, as “schools and other community groups may be allowed to visit the site for education.” Excuse me? What am I missing here? Are we worried that the convicts will get out and harm the poor unsuspecting students while the students are on a field trip? Or that they will leer at the students from the windows of their jail cells, causing them irreparable trauma? Or that the students might see the jail and take up a life of crime? Can anyone make sense of any of this? Mark Smith Leland.

Age is relative
To the editor: How old is too old? It seems everyone’s idea of age is different. With many octogenarians leading productive lives and never considered too old, I think it’s time to recognize that age is relative.

Orange barge, crane
To the editor: The orange barge and crane have been a ubiquitous site the past few years in Grand Traverse Bay. The barge spent a year or so sunk in Greilickville, then was moored for a while without permission in Peshawbestown, later again sunk off of Paradesia Point near Northport.

Millage renewal important
To the editor: In August a very vital and important millage renewal will be on the ballot. Continuing support for the Early Childhood millage will allow our Health Department and Parenting Communities the continuity to continue supporting our young families and children.

Do the smart thing
To the editor: After reading the solar energy article on the front page, Feb. 29, I felt a need to respond to the “controversy” aspect of it.

Appalled by intolerance
To the editor: In a letter published in the Enterprise, county board member Kama Ross laments that she is “continually disheartened by public comment … and letters to the editor from county residents who do not check their facts before sharing their views.” She was elected. I am appalled at her lack of tolerance for opinions that disagree with hers.

Reproductive health
To the editor: Voters need to know that Republicans intend to undermine all aspects of women’s reproductive rights, all of which a majority of Americans strongly approve. For example, the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) decision by the Alabama Supreme Court making embryos created through the IVF process “Persons”, landed like a lead balloon.

Solar panels over parking lots?
To the editor: A recent Enterprise letter to the editor (March 7th) criticized the idea of putting in solar energy at the Leelanau County Government Center, and specifically called out mounting some of them as carports over parking areas. Another letter pointed out— correctly— that although solar panel output is reduced by cloud cover here, installations eventually pay back more than they cost.

Do they care?
To the editor: The GOP response to President Biden’s State of the Union address was a vapid, emotionally overacted, Sally Struthers-like performance completely devoid of content. That party putting their chosen representative, a woman, in a kitchen says everything we need to know about their wished for reversion to an imagined golden past.

SOS website has answers
To the editor: K.L. Kawecki expressed concern that 116% of eligible voters are registered to vote in Leelanau County and suggested that the group promoting this figure should be taken more seriously.

Lane change
To the editor: I was once again offended, but not surprised, at Commissioner Lautner’s response to the results of the County employee culture survey. The survey identified serious deficiencies in the work culture and specifically called out Commissioner Lautner’s contribution to the problems.

To the editor: Congressman Bergman takes pride in 40 years of military service and having retired from the Marine Corp as a lieutenant general. Congressman Bergman is a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
