Orange barge, crane

The orange barge and crane have been a ubiquitous site the past few years in Grand Traverse Bay.

The barge spent a year or so sunk in Greilickville, then was moored for a while without permission in Peshawbestown, later again sunk off of Paradesia Point near Northport. Each time it sunk it has polluted the waters of the Bay, perhaps not as egregiously as the worst polluters but still unnecessary.

It makes one wonder, though, if bigger polluters are getting away with worse behavior.

County, State and federal law enforcement have been unable to rid our waters from the infamous barge.

The latest irony in this saga is the current placement partially out of the water on the rocks the shore, south of Suttons Bay, protected under a trio of flags, Including our country’s flag.

This brings to mind a quote from Nobel Laurette Bob Dylan: “They say that patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings.”
