Keeping Leelanau beautiful
Keeping Leelanau beautiful
To the editor: I appreciated the editorial on Earth Day that highlighted work of the Leelanau Conservancy. There is another agency that receives far less attention, yet is also busy conserving the resources of Leelanau county. 05/15/2024 05:44 PM
‘Topsy-turvy’ world
‘Topsy-turvy’ world
To the editor: Wild fiat money creation! Reckless deficit spending! 19% inflation! Eroded quality of life! Wide open borders! Laken Riley! Crime! Fentanyl! $4 gas! Food up 30%! Energy up 32%! Lawlessness! Campus anarchy! War! Death! Destruction! Stalinist show trials! Election interference! Interest rates 8%! Rogue DOJ and courts! Hypocrisy and double standards! Unequal justice! Allies betrayed! Civil society collapsing! Afghanistan! Did I miss anything? Had enough of this upside-down, topsy-turvy Mad Max world? Me, too. So on November 5 I’m voting Republican right down the ballot. 05/15/2024 05:44 PM

To the editor: We’ve all seen the letters and articles highlighting the pros and cons of the next stretch of the Heritage Trail, which would be just under 5 miles long and cost about 14 million dollars. There is certainly some controversy over cutting some 7,000 trees in natural areas, and while trails are a wonderful thing, to me, this one seems a bit overbearing in its design. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM
‘Unique challenges’
‘Unique challenges’
To the editor: After nearly four years as Leland Township trustee and planning commissioner, I am running for supervisor. My wife and I have three children who’ve attended Leland and St. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM
‘Support our police’
‘Support our police’
To the editor: Our men and women in blue have had an uprising battle these past few years. The risk for them has risen far beyond what anyone could have imagined. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM
More ‘nightmares’ please
More ‘nightmares’ please
To the editor: I keep seeing the Biden years described as a “nightmare.” Let’s see. A plan that beat back the pandemic. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM

‘Vote democratic’
To the editor: Early in my career my boss at the time, a Mormon, and I, a Jew, traveled to Japan. Our Japanese colleagues wondered why there were so many religions in America. 05/08/2024 04:54 PM
Infrequently heard
Infrequently heard
To the editor: Nostalgia, things not much heard anymore. • “That’s tops!” • “Swell.” • “In all my born days.” • “Soup’s on.” • “Hi doll.” • “Not in my lifetime.” • “Well, I have never…” • “Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.” Donna Burr Leland. 05/01/2024 05:08 PM
Elements of democracy
Elements of democracy
To the editor: Democracy is a topic of much discussion in our daily conversations, one result of our political turmoil. Withmanyamong us sharing thoughts on the importance of and elements of democracy, it’s fitting for the Smithsonian (April/May 2024) to reveal the connection of and importance of the library to colonial education and ultimately to the support and understanding of democracy. 05/01/2024 05:08 PM
Yes to Parenting Communities
Yes to Parenting Communities
To the editor: Parenting Communities of Leelanau County (PCLC) support new parents who are often far removed from their own families. Without help, inevitable parenting challenges can raise fears of inadequacy. 05/01/2024 05:08 PM
Stand Up
Stand Up
To the editor: A 16-year old North Carolina student was recently suspended for asking whether the term “alien” in a school assignment related to “illegal aliens without green cards.” Administrators considered that racist. Since when did posing ANY question in school (or in our country!) become grounds for punishment? Are we all to be penalized now for asking certain questions? George Orwell’s book, “1984,” warned of the concept that “freedom is slavery.” Mao, the Soviet Union, and Pol Pot perfected that idea, and examples in America are increasingly common. 04/24/2024 04:43 PM
Thank you
Thank you
To the editor: Thank you to all who came out to the Contra Dance event at the Glen Arbor Township Hall on Saturday for a well-attended, extremely fun time! Thanks, especially, to Vicki Berglund, for her mad organizational skills, and to Woodland Celtic and Pat, for the great live music, calling, and instruction. Let’s do this again!
