‘Vote democratic’
To the editor: Early in my career my boss at the time, a Mormon, and I, a Jew, traveled to Japan. Our Japanese colleagues wondered why there were so many religions in America.

Trump is ‘rewriting’ politics
Whether you like him or not, when they rewrite the political history of the last 10 years or so, credit can be given to one Donald Trump for rewriting most of the political truisms that dominated the political arena prior to his grand entrance onto the scene.

Infrequently heard
To the editor: Nostalgia, things not much heard anymore. • “That’s tops!” • “Swell.” • “In all my born days.” • “Soup’s on.” • “Hi doll.” • “Not in my lifetime.” • “Well, I have never…” • “Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.” Donna Burr Leland.

Craig, a ‘friend’ to Leelanau’ will be missed
Curiosity is the essence of a good interview. That’s why I left the Scott Craig and Carol Bawden home with a feeling of inadequacy.

Uptick in Piping Plover population a plus
The plight of the Piping Plover, a small, endangered shorebird, calls for attention and conservation efforts as another breeding season is in full bloom on the peninsula from April through July. We would like to highlight the continued success of the Piping Plover research team at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SBDNL) after years of hard work that has undoubtedly led to a rebound in the small shoreline birds population.

Elements of democracy
To the editor: Democracy is a topic of much discussion in our daily conversations, one result of our political turmoil. Withmanyamong us sharing thoughts on the importance of and elements of democracy, it’s fitting for the Smithsonian (April/May 2024) to reveal the connection of and importance of the library to colonial education and ultimately to the support and understanding of democracy.

Freshman legislator ruffling feathers
Imagine you are on a new job for three months when the boss calls you in strongly suggesting that you need to perform a certain function which is against everything you stand for. As they say on the TV broadcast, “What would you do?” Say hello to Dylan Wegela.

Stand Up
To the editor: A 16-year old North Carolina student was recently suspended for asking whether the term “alien” in a school assignment related to “illegal aliens without green cards.” Administrators considered that racist. Since when did posing ANY question in school (or in our country!) become grounds for punishment? Are we all to be penalized now for asking certain questions? George Orwell’s book, “1984,” warned of the concept that “freedom is slavery.” Mao, the Soviet Union, and Pol Pot perfected that idea, and examples in America are increasingly common.

Thank you
To the editor: Thank you to all who came out to the Contra Dance event at the Glen Arbor Township Hall on Saturday for a well-attended, extremely fun time! Thanks, especially, to Vicki Berglund, for her mad organizational skills, and to Woodland Celtic and Pat, for the great live music, calling, and instruction. Let’s do this again! Terri Myers Glen Arbor.

Workforce housing needed
To the editor: Sorry to hear Northport still has not seriously considered utilizing its 7th Street property as a site for work-force housing. Twenty homes, possibly more could be situated on the land which is 6% unbuildable.

Earth Day column
On this Earth Week, we are busting out the hiking shoes, and hitting a few of our favorite spots. Earlier this month, the landscape of one of the most magical trails in Leelanau County saw the effects of an ever-changing landscape.
