Task Force chairman responds to criticism
Task Force chairman responds to criticism
As Chair and frequent spokesperson for the Leelanau County Energy Futures Task Force, I have become a lightning rod for criticisms involving our group. This is unfortunate because it detracts from the important work done by this excellent body of dedicated citizens. 06/05/2024 08:28 PM

Poll results shocking, democracy dissed
The trusty old thesaurus suggests there are 52 synonyms for the word shocking ranging from distressing to shameful and everything in-between and in this case everyone of them applies to this latest polling data on the state of our democracy. 06/05/2024 08:28 PM
Patriotic community
Patriotic community
To the editor: Why is our VFW Post 7731 Memorial Day program a success? All of our members work hard to host this important event. We have good advanced advertising and we have good newspaper coverage. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
With thanks
With thanks
To the editor: Thank you to all who participated in this year’s Leelanau Reads community reading event! We welcomed approximately 60 readers at library book discussions and 300 audience members at the author talk. Thank you to author William Kent Krueger, interviewer Aaron Stander, Northport Public School and the individuals who provided technical assistance at this venue, bookseller Pamela Grath from Dog Ears Books, each library’s Friends of the Library group and the Mid-Michigan Library League. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
A conflict
A conflict
To the editor: An investigation is underway to determine whether the chair of a county energy task force violated the county conflict policy when he helped write and advocated for a grant that would pay him. Perhaps the chair, who is in the energy business, should not lead a county body in the same line of work. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM

Open meetings lead to better governance
Open meetings lead to better governance
There’s been much ado about the actions of a new group created by the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners. The Leelanau Energy Futures Task Force was established last fall to educate and advocate for renewable energy on the Leelanau peninsula. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Pattern of behavior
Pattern of behavior
To the editor: Having attended the May 13 Leland Township board meeting, I was disappointed to read the Enterprise’s reporting on the DNR dock removal in Leland. Per the story, a DNR proposal to swap park land, detailed in a letter addressed to Supervisor Och, “was not discussed by the Township Board.” The reason, unreported, is the board didn’t know the offer existed. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Food waste
Food waste
To the editor: My last letter was about waste as the archvillain causing our environmental symptoms: extreme/temperatures, hurricanes, food shortages, tornado and health risks etc. We are facing global energy transition. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Truth matters
Truth matters
To the editor: Barbara McQuade in her new book, “Attack From Within: How Disinformation Is Sabotaging America” defines disinformation as the “deliberate use of lies to manipulate people, whether to extract profit or to advance a political agenda.” A recent letter to the Enterprise about a County “cultural survey” reinforces the relevance of McQuade’s quote. The “cultural survey” was not “largely the initiative” of Commissioner Ross. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM

Special birthday
To the editor: Thank you, everyone for all of the cards you sent me for my 95th birthday. They made my birthday extra special. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
Service … priceless
Service … priceless
To the editor: Reflecting on some of the recent letters expressing opinions on our sheriffs’ recent meeting with President Trump, it is my sincere hope that despite any political differences, as a community we can all express our appreciation for the dedication to public safety and well being that our sheriff and his staff have demonstrated. In a time when cynicism and divisiveness pervade our politics and press, it is my hope that we can put any differences aside and recognize the public service Sheriff Borkovich and his staff provide us on a daily basis. 05/29/2024 05:59 PM
