5 YEARS AGO November 28, 2019 The trial of Justin Bembeneck is now in the hands of the jury after three days of testimony and evidence. Leelanau County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Hubbell and William Burdette, Bembeneck’s court-appointed attorney, were expected to make their closing arguments in the case Tuesday.

Bingham Township adopts new recreation plan
The Bingham Township board approved its five-year parks and recreation plan following a public hearing last week. The document outlines improvements for Boughey Park, which is located between M-22 and Grand Traverse Bay, and plans for opening the undeveloped Groesser Park to the public, among other items.

Rd. Comm. rejects road vacation
Lawrence Road in Bingham Township will remain a public road, as the county Road Commission rejected a petition to privatize a 0.8-mile stretch of the road at their Nov. 19 meeting. The resident who filed the petition wanted to close the road because of flooding and trespassing, while some neighbors wanted to keep it open to the public due to its scenic nature.

Board OKs consent agenda
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners approved the following items on their consent agenda at their Nov. 19 regular session: • The uniform and gun allowance for non-union sheriff’s office personnel, including the sheriff, undersheriff, court bailiff s, and marine deputies, in the amount of $14,975.

Lake association seeks executive director
The Glen Lake Association (GLA) is expanding its leadership team with a new executive director position, offering up to $105,000 annually to oversee watershed protection efforts. The job, which was posted earlier this month and pays roughly $85,000 to $105,000 for someone who lives in Leelanau, Grand Traverse, or Benzie counties.
