Five generations of Jillsons have slept to the rhythm of Lake Michigan waves heard from their vacation home in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. In recent months those waves have come crashing ashore, eroding their front yard bluff and forcing the family to take action before their 2,700 square-foot home falls into the big lake. *** If you don’t have a job, you’re not looking very hard. Two government agencies — one federal and the other local — are struggling to fill positions. And a local sub shop has closed due to a dearth of reliable manpower. The U.S. Census Bureau is searching for 160 people to assist in the 2020 Census. But there wasn’t much interest at the advertised hourly rate of $14.50. Earlier this week, the agency sweetened the pot.

Sugar Loaf Resort finally has a “new” owner. The long-shuttered ski resort’s new owner is a corporate entity formed in Nevada in 2012 known as “Rock Investment Advisors, L.L.C.” The only person believed to be currently associated with the limited liability corporation is Remo Polselli, a former owner of the resort. The owner of Sugar Loaf since 2005, Leelanau County native Kate Wickstrom, signed a quit claim deed on Nov. 19 relinquishing ownership of the resort to Rock Investment Advisors. *** Tyler LeVeque, 17, may be tried as an adult for the August accident in Centerville Township that caused the deaths of two people. Leelanau County prosecutor Joseph T. Hubbell filed a petition on Tuesday requesting that LeVeque, who was 16 at the time of the accident, be tried as an adult, though the case will stay in Family Court. LeVeque, who turned 17 six days after the accident, has been charged with two counts of reckless driving causing death and one count of reckless driving causing serious impairment.

Burglars who entered Suttons Bay Schools sometime Saturday night looking for cash found little of the green stuff, but inflicted thousands of dollars worth of damage to windows and ceilings. *** The 40-acre site where officials hope to relocate county facilities near Lake Leelanau is accessible, but at a significant cost. Preliminary estimates to build an access off Sylt Road and provide utilities range from $364,550 to more than $524,031.

The House of Representatives Tuesday afternoon passed the controversial bill to grant tax reimbursement to school districts in Leelanau and Benzie Counties which lost land to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and approved transfer of state owned lands within the park including the D.H. Day State Park and Benzie State Park.
*** The Northport Ski Association started in 1963 as a joint venture of Northport and Leland citizens who were interested in promoting a winter recreation area at reasonable family rates. The present site was rented from Glenn Braman and the rope tow was powered by a tractor at the top of the hill. All the work on the hill was done on a strictly volunteer basis.

Ministers, priests, Farm Bureau leaders and Grange officials will meet at the Buttons Bay hose house at 2:00, December 9 to plan Leelanau county’s share in providing food for Europe. The group will elect officers from its number to head the drive. County Agricultural Agent Stanley Ball, who has the job of organizing this county to do its part in this, the Christian Rural Overseas Program, announces that every farmer in the county will be asked to contribute. *** John M. Kasben, 11 weeks old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kasben of Cedar is back in Munson hospital again for further treatment for infantile paralysis or its after effects. The baby was released about the middle of November but ran a fever and had to be hospitalized again.

John Kinneucan and Family of North Manitou Island was in town Saturday enroute to Traverse City where his family will reside for the winter. *** The Ladies Aid of the E.M. church will hold a sale at the home of Mrs. Dayton Selby Thursday, December 11th, beginning at 2:30 p.m. everyone is cordially invited. *** Mr. Martin Hoeft who has been spending the past few months at North Manitou Island has returned to his home in this Village.
