Phil was born in Detroit on February 23, 1942, to Julius “Phil” and Mary (Bero) Phillips. He was raised in Lincoln Park, where he a_ended St.
Henry’s Catholic School and also, at age 13, _rst met the love of his life, Sharon Lee (Deschler) Phillips. A_er graduating from Lincoln Park High School and spending a year in California, he a_ended and graduated from barber college but was eventually drawn to a job as a lineman at the railyards and later Detroit’s salt mines. On October 28, 1966, in Lincoln Park, Michigan, he married Sharon, moved to Wynado_e, and had their _rst child, Lynne_e.
In August of 1969, they moved to Su_ons Bay, where he worked for Jon Smith at Jon’s Barbershop and later drove the delivery truck for Pepsi-Cola, covering routes throughout Northern Michigan. In 1971 they bought and remodeled the old Se_erbo Farm north of town, where he and his young family, which now included two sons, ( Jason and J.J.), spent their cherished formative years. During this time he actively supported his children raising 4-H animals and participating in youth sports and even school concerts. He was especially fond of holidays and birthdays with extended family, including his much-loved Phillips and Deschler nephews. He was a proud member of St. Michael’s Church in Su_ons Bay and the Knights of Columbus, and also worked for a period of time for Ray and Robert Martinson at the Martinson Funeral Home of Su_ons Bay.
In August of 1986, Phil, Sharon, and their sons moved to Ormond Beach, Florida, where they built and operated their family business, Legendary Golf, while living on Ocean Grove and enjoying the beach and many great neighbors. In 1992 he returned to barbering and before long bought his own barbershop (“Phil’s”) in Ormond-by-the-Sea, where countless customers enjoyed a good haircut, a few jokes, and the local scoop. He also a_ended St. Brenden’s Catholic Church. Upon retirement, Phil and Sharon sold 1942 ~ 2025
their home in Florida, moved into their __hwheel RV, and traveled all over the United States. ey especially loved the West, with Wyoming and Texas being among their favorite places to visit. In 2017, they returned to Su_ons Bay to se_le down permanently.
Phil had a passion for riding his Harley Road King, enjoyed deer hunting, mushroom hunting, and catching and eating _sh, especially perch and walleye. Phil was extremely patriotic and loved his country deeply. A devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions, he endured many losing seasons but never missed a game.
e grandson coal miners and the son of lifelong Ford factory worker, he valued both the work ethic and his Hungarian “Hunkie” pride that he inherited from them. Known for his strong opinions and meticulous ways, there was a right way to do things, a wrong way_and then there was Phil’s way! Behind his occasional gru_ness, though, was a deep love for making li_le kids laugh and williness to help others.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sharon (Su_ons Bay, MI); his children, Dr. Lynne_e McCluskey (N. Augusta, SC), Jason Phillips (Su_ons Bay, MI), and Jeremy “J.J.” Phillips (Ormond Beach, FL); his grandchildren, Finnian McCluskey, Isaac Phillips, and Alec Phillips, _ve nephews and their families; and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Joyce ( Jim) Franklin and Charles (Mary Helen) Phillips.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. on Friday June 27th at the Martinson Funeral Home in Su_ons Bay.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 28th at St. Michael’s Church in Su_ons Bay, with Father Leonard Paul serving as Celebrant.
