Neighbors hear explosion, see fire
Area fire departments were dispatched to an “explosion with smoke and flames visible” at the 1000 block of Sunset Shores Drive in Lake Leelanau Monday morning. “We arrived with Sutton Bay Fire Department and mutual aid from everywhere,” Leland Township Fire Chief Dan Besson said. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM

Leelanau Township is considering its next steps in helping to restore the historic Woolsey Memorial Airport in Northport. A decision on how much funds they have dedicated towards the restoration project could be decided as soon as next month. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM

Villa Marquette acreage now preserved
The deed granting ownership of a stretch of gravelly brook trout stream and 80 acres that it drains took a circuitous route on its way to the Leelanau Conservancy. But ensuring that the property remains undeveloped matches the goals of the Jesuits, whose name appeared on the title for 88 years. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM
Parenting Communities valuable
Parenting Communities valuable
To the editor: I would like to express my extreme appreciation and gratitude for Parenting Communities of Leelanau County. I started using their program five years ago when my son was an infant. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM
Where are the unions?
Where are the unions?
To the editor: The federal government is importing scab labor to suppress wages of working Americans. It is obvious big corporations and the wealthy don’t want to pay a living wage. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM

We should be proud
We should be proud
To the editor: I was on a work call recently where regional child wellness agencies described services provided families and parents who face challenging behaviors with and/or who have questions about their young child’s development. All agree that the earlier a child’s developmental delays are identified, the more effective the interventions can be and the greater likelihood of having a healthy child, ready to handle kindergarten, and other emotional and social issues. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM
Lived experiences matter
Lived experiences matter
To the editor: Recent letters to the editor offered “evidence” to convince us that the Biden economy is strong. Now if only the American people could be convinced! What really matters is our lived experience. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM
Roll back 2017 tax cuts
Roll back 2017 tax cuts
To the editor: I am no expert on tax policy, but I can read. Massive, permanent tax cuts in the last 25 years have caused a dramatic increase in the national debt by reducing the amount of money the government collects to conduct its business. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM

Biden faces trouble in reelection effort
“We’ve got trouble.” “Right here in River City.” “Trouble with a capital T.” “And that rhymes with B.” “And that stands for Biden.” With apologies to Meredith Wilson of Music Man fame, substitute White House for River City and you have a poignant description of the trouble the sitting president is having trying to nail down four more years. In Michigan the Donald, for the first time in years, has an eight-point lead which is well beyond the margin of error and about the only good thing the Biden camp can profess is that the election is not happening right now. 01/17/2024 04:38 PM
Parties react to survey results
Parties react to survey results
Everyone seems to agree that the workplace survey results delivered to commissioners last week painted an unflattering picture of county government. But county Clerk Michelle Crocker may have gotten the worst of it. 01/10/2024 03:45 PM
