Hansen Foods in Suttons Bay has a new owner. Connie Frost, 57, of Maple City said her purchase of the grocery store officially went through last Tuesday. Frost has worked at Hansen Foods since 2002, when she joined original owner Dave Hansen to handle the back room of the grocery store. The store was eventually sold to grocery manager Gus O’Brien, who told Frost in 2011 about his future plan to retire. *** County students were on the sixth day of a 6-day weekend yesterday as the thermometer dropped and wind chills of 20 to 25 below zero were expected. Most schools had a scheduled day off Friday at the end of the semester exam week. However, come Monday, as the school week began a winter storm swept through the area, dumping as much as 7 inches in Maple City with lesser amounts recorded in Bingham Township and Northport. 01/31/2024 06:09 PM

Adapted from his book Good Harbor Michigan with additional information from the Grand Traverse Herald The settlement of Leelanau by Euro-Americans began as early as the late 1830s but their flow rapidly increased after 1855. Traverse City was growing even more rapidly and the Grand Rapids and Indiana railroad arrived there on November 15, 1872. Almost immediately there was talk and excitement about a train in Leelanau. The talks got serious in January 1885 when a group of businessmen discussed the possibility of a narrow gauge railroad between Maple City and Good Harbor, according to the Leelanau Enterprise. 01/31/2024 06:09 PM

Board seeks counsel for BATA dispute
The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners agreed to lawyer up Jan. 24 in anticipation of the Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA) suing Grand Traverse County. The dispute centers around the recent addition of a second Grand Traverse County commissioner to the BATA board, while an August 2023 agreement says the board shall have one commissioner from each of the two member counties. 01/31/2024 06:09 PM

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m holding my breath to see what Mother Nature has in store for us in the weeks ahead. I bet even the Groundhog can’t be sure anymore. Mayor Rosie Disch has been sniffing around looking for a local groundhog to get a local forecast. Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks or whistle-pigs, are common in northern Michigan. Not the same old Lions
Leelanau was well represented at the NFC Championship game Sunday between the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers as multiple peninsula people made the trip out to San Francisco.
