Severe solar storms and dazzling Northern Lights displays have been gracing the skies of Michigan more than usual these past few months, and like so many other people amazed by the natural phenomena, I have been relishing every chance I get to see them. 06/19/2024 04:23 PM

To the editor: Unbelievably, and in a break from past practices, local senior citizens were denied their right to obtain political and volunteer information from both Republicans and Democrats at last Tuesday’s Senior Expo held at Suttons Bay High School. The Expo promised to “bring in over 100 vendors showcasing the latest in information, resources, products, and services; giving you the tools to live a full life as you age.” The Republicans and Democrats were kicked out of the Expo, and school policy was given as the reason, even though it is nearly impossible to imagine that a school in Leelanau County has an anti-free speech policy. 06/19/2024 04:23 PM

Mary A. Moore

Mary Angeline(Hansen) Moore, 91, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2024. Mary was born September 16, 1932 in Muskegon, Michigan to Alfred and Rose(Minkel) Hansen. Mary was a devoted Catholic with unwavering faith. She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church and Saint Francis Church; where she was a Eucharistic minister. Mary was proud to have earned her Associates Degree from Northwestern Michigan College. She had many jobs throughout her life, including the Coast Guard PX, Peninsula Asphalt and Kellogg Wholesale. She also worked weekends at the Tanz Haus as a bartender from 1972 until it closed in 1987. A woman of many talents, Mary was a member of the Sweet Adeline’s Chorus and award winning barbershop quartets. Mary loved all sports whether professional or college. Her favorite professional team was the Detroit Red Wings and she had a large collection of memorabilia. Her very favorite sporting events were whatever her 6 grandchildren were playing in any given season. She attended countless games locally and on the road. Mary was very proud of her grandchildren’s many accomplishments in life. Mary’s life is a testament to her strong spirit, dedication and zest for life.
