To the editor:
Change is hard! I am astounded by the changes in my lifetime. Who would have thought encyclopedias would go by the wayside and we would type in random questions to a computer to learn all kinds of things, some true, some not.
Scientists overwhelmingly agree that the climate is changing due to human activity, and pinpoint the use of fossil fuels as the main culprit. We have already seen a dramatic increase in storms, rainfall, and other events attributable to climate change. Fossil fuels currently provide about 80% of U.S. energy. Wind and solar power decrease the need for fossil fuels. Not only are they the least expensive sources of newly generated power, they cause much less environmental damage than extracting oil and gas from the ground. Some people say that solar panels and wind farms are ugly. I invite you to look around at the tangle of utility poles and lines that we accept as “natural.”
I believe we all want a safe and healthy future for our children and grandchildren. Having a habitable planet should not be a political issue. It makes logical sense that when we understand the cause of a problem, we seek innovative solutions.
I remember one of my mom’s old sayings - “cutting off your nose to spite your face.” Is that what this is all about? Argument for the sake of argument? The entire world needs to come together to remediate the damage we have caused - this is a crisis of epic proportions!
