To the editor:
OK, let me speak to the truth and confront the ignorance of the foreign owned Fox “news” network.
I have significant knowledge of this issue as my brother, who passed away Memorial Day, was from the beginning of the 1980s to the year 2000 and Director of the Department of Immigration Litigation in the Civil Division of the Department of Justice. He started with about 30 lawyers and when he left he had enough to get that number around 120.
One of his early cases had to do with Haitian refugees that the government denied. The ACLU won their release; and in so doing voided our immigration laws. The case continued over a year till my brother finally won, establishing the right of our country to control our borders.
But that case established the right of real refugees to have legal entrance into our country.
For example in the later part of the 1990s he went to Guantanamo to interview Cuban refugees who were HIV + and as such were not allowed to enter the U.S.
Having determined they were indeed endangered by a return into Cuba he met with the Attorney General Janet Reno and told her we had to let them enter despite their HIV status, which she did.
My brother was at that time the government’s expert on immigration law; and his shadow still is cast against the legal walls of that department.
