In a quick turn of events, Village of Northport Council is now uncertain whom it will appoint as the at-large representative on the Northport/ Leelanau Township Utilities Authority (NLTUA). At a special meeting Feb. 1, council had arrived at an unofficial consensus regarding the planned appointment of Campbell McLeod to the position. *** No raise is warranted for a township clerk whose duties have largely been reassigned to her deputy. Such was the sentiment at Tuesday’s meeting of the Kasson Township Board — the first since a Feb. 1 special meeting during which duties of Clerk Traci Cruz were reassigned to her deputy. But it wasn’t fellow board members expressing frustration over the situation. It was a member of the audience.

Lake Michigan is now 80 percent frozen, and appears on track to freeze up tighter and sooner than any other time since at least 1963 when scientists started keeping detailed records. “I think there’s a chance it will close up,” said Jia Wang, a scientist who is an ice climatologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) station in Ann Arbor. *** For people tired of what’s turning into a long and recordsetting winter, Leelanau County will offer a full slate of activities this weekend designed to make the season a little more palatable. We’re talking about a yeti visit, chili taste and for the strong at heart a dip into South Bar Lake. Festivals are planned in Empire, Glen Arbor and Suttons Bay. *** The long and sordid tale of Sugar Loaf Resort took some major turns over the past week. First, Leelanau County officials complied with a request from a real estate agent to inspect the resort two days earlier than they’d planned — just hours after this newspaper’s weekly deadline last week. In a nutshell, the inspection on Feb. 5 found that Sugar Loaf’s physical plant may not be in such bad
shape after all.

Philip Hamburg of Bingham Township was hired as the new Suttons Bay village manager by the village council at its regular monthly meeting Monday. Hamburg will replace Marylouise “Punky” Idema, who has served as village manager since 1987. Idema is retiring for health reasons. *** Suttons Bay Village Council members were cool to the prospect of buying the 161-acre Frigid Foods property with state grant money. *** A power blackout Tuesday that blew an electrical component of the Leelanau Enterprise’s press left little alternative but to have the Petoskey News-Review print the front section. Production staff was scheduled to return to Leland late Wednesday evening to complete stuffing and bundling
of papers.

Boasting complete and modern firefighting equipment and housed in the nearly new fire station in Northport, the new fire truck was manufactured to specifications at a cost to the township of $28,000.
