Glen Lake Board of Education approved (7-0) a district school of choice policy that will have open enrollment dates from May 6-22, 2024.

A drafted policy for Glen Lake recommended that grade level enrollment be capped, starting at 16 students for Young 5’s; 60 students for kindergarten through second grade; 75 for students third through 12th grade.

For in-district families that move into the area, 10% will be reserved for Young 5’s through fifth grade, and 5% for fourth through 12th grade.

“Those are the finalized points and this is just implementing the lottery system and ensuring additional staff will not be necessary,” Glen Lake superintendent Jason Misner said.

Initial vetting of applications will begin on May 6, and the lottery of drawing names will happen in June. Glen Lake will draw names until every name is drawn; forming a wait list of names if the number of applicants exceeds the number of open slots.

Successful applicants have five business days to turn in their completed enrollment paperwork to the respective registrar. Failure to do so will result in loss of opportunity to enroll. Special circumstances will be considered for extension.

Remaining names on the waitlist will be informed during the first week of August if they are able to enroll. This will depend on the number of in-district enrollments received throughout the summer months. There will not be a second open enrollment period. Transportation for a school of choice student will be the families responsibility, according to the board.

If additional time is needed for prospective families during the application process, contact the school within the first five business days of the enrollment period.

In other news the board:

• Received agreements for collection of summer school property tax for Centerville, Cleveland, Glen Arbor and Kasson Township. A collection fee of $2.50 will be levied per parcel.

• Approved the purchase of a bus with a handicapped lift at a cost of $147,000. This will be on the next budget as a line item.

• Announced that Glen Lake seniors Dylan Cundiff and Tyler Bixby were named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

“(Cundiff and Bixby) are a great representation of Glen Lake, who have taken full advantage of their opportunity,” Cory McNitt school board president said.
