Although Leelanau County Road Commission workers and staff are being credited for keeping roads in good condition this winter, elected members of the Road Commission appear to be getting off to a slippery start in 2019. At the commission’s regular meeting this week, Road Commission Chairman Bob Joyce accused a fellow commission member of “bullying and intimidating” the commission’s newly-appointed Superintendent/Manager Dave Priest. *** Students and staff at Leelanau County schools recently enjoyed an unplanned winter vacation thanks to Mother Nature. Northport Public School, Leland Public School, Glen Lake Schools and Suttons Bay Public Schools were all treated to six snow days in a seven-day period, beginning Friday, Jan. 25 and going through Monday. In between, students and staff were dragged back to school facilities for a lone day of school Friday, Feb. 1.

The main topic of discussion yesterday morning in Slim’s Cafe in Mohawk was the weather. Meanwhile in Maple City, patrons at Pegtown Station busily chatted away about ... the weather. About 150 miles — as the crow flies — and exactly 29.5 inches of snow separated their conversations. Mohawk lies in the north-central part of the Keweenaw Peninsula, and of course Maple City is located in the heart of Leelanau County. *** Long-shuttered Sugar Loaf Resort is expected to be inspected tomorrow by building official Steven Haugen of the Leelanau County Construction Code Authority regardless of whether anyone claiming ownership of the resort lets him in. Haugen plans to execute a judicial search warrant he obtained late last year to enter the premises. *** West Grand Traverse Bay was officially declared frozen on Monday — the first time the bay has frozen over since 2009, and the earliest it has frozen over since 1996. The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay, based in Elmwood Township, is the official keeper of records for the bay freezing over. The center’s program director Sarah U’Ren said Monday that she recorded Feb. 3 as the date the bay froze over this year.

Real estate brokers are hoping to sell the 161-acre Fridgid Foods property to the Village of Suttons Bay by taking advantage of a new state waterfront development fund. Representing the owner of the former fruit processing plant—which closed in 1988—two Grand Rapids brokers will make their “pitch” Monday at the regular meeting of the Village Council. *** Public input on a plan to rezone property along M-72 in Elmwood Township for an exlusive, private golf club and development is being gathered by the township Planning Commission. A group of property owners represented locally by Dr. John G. Milliken of Traverse City have petitioned the Planning Commission to rezone 230-acres off M-72 between Carter and Angus roads from residential to
commercial resort.

The reverberations of the nationwide independent truck strike were felt directly in Leelanau County this week in the form of layoffs. Fruit processing firms holding their truck drivers from making deliveries to eastern and midwestern states and at least two reported incidents of threats to truck drivers. Charles Kalchik Jr., owner of Bay View Orcherds at Omena said he had ordered his truck drivers to stay home for their own safety. *** Suttons Bay’s second annual Winter Sprint snowmobile competition will be held Saturday at Suttons Bay High School. There will be a registration for drivers from 3-5 p.m. and a chili supper will be served from 4-6 p.m. in the Suttons Bay High School cafeteria.

Miss Emelia Schaub, the former prosecuting attorney of Leelanau County, recently moved her law office into new quarters, which have been under construction during the past few months. The building which is located on the Narrows of Lake Leelanau, near the bridge and township dock, a short block from highway M-22, is a one and onehalf story structure of colonial design. *** Seven ski jumping experts of Detroit will test the new Sugar Loaf ski jump on Saturday and Sunday of this week, as a prologue to the use of the jump during the Central Ski association four-way meet at Sugar Loaf on February 21 and 22. The jumping tests will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. both afternoons and will be open to the public.

Wili Buckler who had the contract of cutting ice for the town people informs us he cut 20,000 cakes. *** After 38 years of service as superintendent of the Traverse City State Hospital, Dr. James D. Munson has tendered his resignation to take effec July 1st. Dr. E. H. Campbell of Newberry will succeed him.
