A group of Omena residents returned recently from a weeklong Caribbean cruise that they won for placing second in the DJ Trivia District Championships last spring. Enjoying the cruise were Dan and Chrysti Duffiney, their daughter Emaleigh, Chrysti’s mother, Nancy Groesser, and family friend Joanne Brown.
Their trivia team is the DeeGee’s (Duffiney-Groesser), and they play regularly at Knot Just a Bar in Omena on Wednesday evenings. Last winter, they qualified to go to the District Championships which were held at Turtle Creek Casino. The winning team members at that event were Dan and Chrysti, two of their daughters Emaleigh and Brooke, and Nancy. Brooke was unable to attend the cruise, so Joanne happily filled in.
The trip started out with a little bit too much excitement. They were supposed to fly from Traverse City to Miami when their flight was cancelled due to the major winter storm that hit the state on Jan. 12. They rented an SUV and drove to Indianapolis, where they were able to get a flight to Miami. It was all worth the effort, as they boarded the Carnival Celebration on Jan. 14, and had a wonderful time on the cruise. They ported at Amber Cove, San Juan, and St. Thomas. They enjoyed meeting and mingling with other DJ Trivia players, hosts, affiliates, and even one of the owners of DJ Trivia and DJ Bingo.
It may not be a Caribbean cruise, but there’s lots of fun to be had at the “Cocktails, Comedy, and Canapes” event at the Willowbrook Mill beginning this Friday and running for two Friday, Saturday, Sundays. The event is presented by the Northport Performing Arts Center (NPAC) in collaboration with the Old Town Playhouse. You can to the NPAC website for more information and to get tickets.
The Leelanau Township Library in Northport has a monthly Book Discussion Group that is open to everyone. This month’s book is “John Woman” by Walter Mosley, and the discussion is on Feb. 28. The library also hosts the Great Decisions discussion group every Tuesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. More information on both is on the library’s website.
Happy Birthday this week to Nonie Steele, Dave Waskiewicz, Richard Colling, Ken Wylie, and to Victoria Huffman, who is now a teenager.
