To the editor:
There’s a saying that an evil man will burn down his own country in order to rule over the ashes. That unfortunately seems to describe recent actions of Trump and his MAGA enablers. We need immigration reform and improved border security, but as of this writing Trump is trying to kill a bill that would provide exactly that.
A bipartisan group in the Senate is nearing an agreement that would reportedly expand detention capacity, make it more difficult to claim asylum, speed up processing, and add to border patrol staff. But Trump doesn’t want the border problem addressed because he wants to make the issue a centerpiece of his campaign. He said on Truth Social that fixing the problem now would be a “gift” to the Democrats.
Mitch McConnell is in a quandary; he doesn’t want to undermine Trump, but he does want to get something done. However, even if he’s able to get a bill through the Senate, Mike Johnson has said that it would be DOA if it’s sent to the House. Republican Representative Troy Nehls of Texas said the quiet part out loud: he won’t vote for a bill to address border issues because he’s “not willing to do too damn much … to help Joe Biden’s approval rating.”
Once again, the MAGAdominated GOP puts party over country. Call me old fashioned but I believe the American people deserve a government that puts problem solving ahead of scoring political points.
