Over-reaction

To the editor:

Citizens of Leelanau County should feel that their county commissioners truly listen to what they say. That was not so with commissioner Kama Ross at a Leelanau County Board of Commissioners meeting on Dec. 29.

Ross over-reacted after a citizen spoke during public comment at that meeting, leading an observer to question whether she cares about the people she pretends to represent. Following the public comment, she said that, “You can run for office; I encourage you with your passion to do something about it, and just don’t complain.”

Note to Ms. Ross. It is not complaining when a citizen brings an issue to the board. Participating in public comment represents a high level of civic duty. People who take the time to speak at public meetings should be thanked rather than scolded and belittled.

The exchange caused two commissioners, a Republican and a Democrat, to speak out in support of citizens who participate in public comment. They were listening. Ms. Ross doesn’t seem to care about your opinion.
