Kudos to the Road Commission, emergency personnel

The white stuff many have been clamoring for arrived over the weekend — in a big way. Ten inches of snow was recorded Friday and Saturday in Maple City.

The white stuff many have been clamoring for arrived over the weekend — in a big way.

Ten inches of snow was recorded Friday and Saturday in Maple City. More than eight inches falling over the next two days, bringing total snow for a week ending Monday to nearly 28 inches.

The National Weather Service provided plenty of warning of the “bomb cyclone” allowing residents time of stock up on provisions before hunkering down to ride out the first significant storm of the winter of 2023-24.

But just as many were cozying up, county Road Commission employees went to work, plowing through snowdrifts and keeping roads open. Their work was made more challenging when temperatures dropped to the teens and single digits.

When it’s that cold, sand and salt application can only do so much.

While crews cleared roads, residents blew — or shoveled — snow from their driveways.

Given the abundance of the white stuff, it bears reminding that plowing snow across or into a road is not only dangerous — it’s against the law.

The weather also wreaked havoc for crews responding to a residential fire near Lake Leelanau Monday.

Three vehicles became stuck while accessing the scene, located off a private road. Not to mention the winds and biting cold which made fighting the blaze that much more difficult.

Thankfully, the responders were able to confine the blaze to an attached garage. No injuries were reported.

Kudos to the Road Commission, emergency services personnel and even the tow truck drivers who keep our roads clear and help all of us ride out the winter on the peninsula.
