The community of Cedar is still reeling from a violent assault last week in which one family member attacked her own kin. Bailey K. Rosinski, 25, and her accomplice, Justin Bembeneck, 33, are held on $1 million bond, accused of multiple felonies including attempted murder. According to the criminal complaint, Rosinski and Bembeneck entered the home of Francis and Helen Rosinski just before 8 p.m. Thursday. Law enforcement officials allege in search of money for drugs. *** The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians is continuing to expand its economic development efforts beyond casino gaming and this week announced its acquisition of a steel fabrication firm in Charlevoix. The firm, Bay Shore Steel Works, is described in a tribal news release as a “fullservice component manufacturer and finisher with the capability to process components from raw plate to painted weldment or assembly.”

Connie Binsfeld’s legacy is being remembered locally and across Michigan by prominent state officials who served with and knew her. In Leelanau County, county administrator Chet Janik recalls having former Lieutenant Governor Binsfeld as a long-term sub while attending Glen Lake High School. Binsfeld died on January 12. She was 89.

*** Mike Murray, superintendent of the Suttons Bay school district, announced this week that he will close the book on a career that has spanned 43 years. “It was a hard decision to make and I just can’t picture myself doing anything other than what I’m doing,” said Murray, who has been at the district’s helm since 2007. His last day on the job will be June 30.

*** Dan Sohasky looked around the Suttons Bay cafeteria Tuesday night, glancing at all the people who showed up for a chili dinner and auction for his benefit. “I didn’t know I had this many friends,” said a smiling Sohasky, after eating some soup and enjoying the company at his reserved table that included his mother, who lives in Muskegon. About 150 people came out for Sohasky, who has been battling Stage 4 prostrate cancer in the past 10 months.

25 YEARS AGO January 21, 1999

Funds for the purchase of Crystal River-front property in Glen Arbor were included in provisions outlined by President Bill Clinton in the State of the Union address as part of a “lands legacy” program. The proposal would restore funding, some $900 million, to the Land and Water Conservation Act. About half would go to land acquisition for national parks, possibly including 180 acres owned by The Homestead resort.

*** The January thaw has arrived as temperatures rose to 43 degrees replacing sub-freezing temperatures and non-stop snow.

50 YEARS AGO January 17, 1974

Leelanau County Sheriff’s Department is investigating two break-ins in the Cedar area early Monday morning which resulted in an estimated $2,000 damage to pinball machines, pool tables other electronic games and liquor at Sugarfoot Saloon just north of Cedar and an attempted safe job at Cedar Hardware. Sheriff’s deputies said the break-in took place in the early hours Monday as the Sugarfoot Saloon was open until 2 a.m. Monday and there was also someone working in the hardware store until about the same time.

*** The Village of Suttons Bay has given public notice to the Board of Commissioners of its critical landfill situation by calling on the Board in a half-page paid advertisement in this newspaper to “establish a landfi ll that is accessible to all persons in the northern part of Leelanau County. Patrick Yoder, Village President, Wednesday told the Enterprise that the situation is critical and that it is estimated that in order to bring the Suttons Bay Village Landfill up to state approved licensing criteria would involve an investment of $70,000.

75 YEARS AGO January 15, 1948

Brian Rockwell, manager of the Bay Theater in Suttons Bay, announces that he has secured pictures of the Tournament of Roses and the Rose Bowl football game featuring Michigan and Southern California, for presentation at his theater on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week, January 20, 21, 22. The Bay Theater is one of the first theaters in the region to show these films.

*** Henry LaBeau was named fire chief of the newly organized Empire Volunteer Fire department Tuesday night, when 16 men met with the village council to form a muchneeded fire fighting body for the Empire community. The men will hold monthly meetings at the Empire Hose house for instruction in latest methods of fire fighting, and for the planning of community fire protection.
