The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office are warning residents about a telephone scam.
The department received several reports Friday of phone calls from someone who identifi ed themselves as “Sgt. Cooper from the Leelanau Sheriff Department.”
The caller is telling those who answer such things as a loved one has been arrested for “multiple blood violations,” or that they had a warrant for their arrest for failing to provide DNA, and could pay the fines over the phone.
The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office does not have a Sgt. Cooper as an employee. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency will never call and threaten arrest or solicit funds over the phone.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to remain vigilant on suspected scam phone calls and never give out your personal or financial information.
