The Suttons Bay Board of Education (BOE) reelected Chris DeJong, who has been on the board since 2018, as president at its annual organizational business meeting on Monday night. Also approved were other board officers for 2024 including reelecting Lizabeth Venie, who has also been on the board since 2018, as vice president.
“Thank you for your trust,” DeJong said after being reelected at the meeting. In addition, Gerald Devol was nominated and approved to serve as board secretary this year, while Gregory Gurka, who has been on the board since 2019, will continue in his role as board treasurer.
Following the appointment of board officers was the approval of board committee members. Lee Grant will serve as chair for building and grounds, with member Eric Mattis. Gurka will serve as chair for policy and finance with member Gerald Devol, and Venie will serve as chair for curriculum and personnel, along with board member Maureen Fletcher. The committees will meet together as needed throughout the year.
Seven people make up the board and are elected to serve for two or four year terms. Board members Lee Grant, Chris DeJong, and Maureen Fletcher will serve their terms until Dec. 31 2026. Other board members Venie, Gurka, Devol and Mattis will serve their terms through Dec. 31, 2024.
In other business, the board also approved: - The resignation of JeanPaul Burnell as a custodian - The hiring of Sierra Klein as a secondary building substitute - The purchase of phone service contract from People Driven for an amount not to exceed $54,000 - The purchase of Better Lesson Professional Learning Program for an amount not to exceed $75,000 - An Independent Contractor Agreement for 12 months with MatchWit Creative LLC for marketing services
