Respect … civility

To the editor:

These past few years have revealed turmoil in our county government in terms of direction and management. This past week, an outside consultant hired by the Board of Commissioners reported on his findings after talking with / hearing from 75% of the employees. The results are not surprising, and in his observations, the turmoil is a result of poor communications among the commissioners, employees, and with the public. While the word “transparency” is often used, it appears that many have doubts that communications reflect this.

Improving the situation will take hard work, tolerance, and vision. Most employees have a positive view of serving the public and feel like they are contributing to the greater good. However, some interpret actions and words by others to be undermining their role.

The foremost goals for the County Board for 2024 are to respect each other, reduce uncivil remarks and behavior, and to establish a professional framework to carry out their responsibilities in tandem with the administrator, other elected officials and department heads.
