Owners and operators of Discovery Pier in Greilickville, the Leelanau Trail, and other local nonprofit organizations will benefit from more than $2.16 million in state funding as part of a $1.3 billion supplemental spending plan approved by the State Legislature and signed into law late last week. “This came about fairly suddenly and was a bit of a surprise,” said Becky Ewing, executive director of Rotary Charities and Rotary Camps and Services. *** Leelanau County residents ringing in 2019 were greeted with a surprise from Mother Nature beginning New Year’s Eve and carrying into the new year. Some 212 acres of what has been known as the Timber Shores land development in Leelanau Township has been sold to three individual buyers, including Gregory Brothers’ Farms, LLC. Local fruit-growers Don and Bob Gregory, who own and operate Cherry Bay Orchards, Inc., have purchased the bulk of the property — about 160 acres. *** Larry Graves hit the roof Saturday — that is the roof at his Suttons Bay office — shovel in hand. “It’s not a job I relish,” said Graves, adding that it was about a month earlier than most years. The snow gauge for Leelanau topped the 100 inch mark with two days left in December. “I wish it had stayed cold. The snow wouldn’t have been so heavy,” he said. *** Leelanau County hunters, armed with more antlerless deer permits than they’ve been issued in any previous season this century, may have fallen short of their mark of culling the herd to a level conducive to Leelanau’s agricultural community. The last of Michigan’s deer seasons ended on New Year’s Day, after which archers hung up their bows. Several factors have contributed to what’s being described as a disappointing deer season for hunters and farmers alike.
