To the editor:
When someone as outspoken on green energy as Joe DeFors publicly endorses a candidate for the Cherryland Electric Cooperative board, it’s important to take notice. Mr. DeFors previously supported the solar panel project that, thanks to opposition from many county residents, did not move forward. That proposal raised critical questions about priorities, costs, and long-term benefits for taxpayers.
Now Mr. DeFors has endorsed Jim Dyer, a candidate who has expressed support for expanding solar and wind energy. While renewable energy has its place, Cherryland members deserve a balanced and practical approach — especially when costs and reliability are on the line.
There have also been concerns raised about potential conflicts of interest. To be clear, former Commissioner Melinda Lautner had no authority to negotiate contracts with Cherryland. However, County Administrator Jim Dyer does. Given that he has publicly stated he would prioritize “sustainability” in energy decisions, voters should consider whether that focus aligns with the financial best interests of county taxpayers.
Cherryland customers should have a voice in determining the direction of our energy future— one that is dependable, affordable, and financially accountable. A vote for Melinda Lautner will have an objective and much needed, common sense approach on the Board of Cherryland Electric.
