Due to health concerns, Northern Boater Nautical Antiques and Michelle Jahraus Fine Art relocated from Cedar to Maple City earlier this year.
The new shop location is at 11271 S. Bright Rd.
“For those who have just started following, we have relocated much closer to home due to health concerns and welcome you along,” the store said in a Facebook post. “For our loyal friends who have stood by us for the past 20 years in Cedar, we can’t wait to show you our new shop! It’s still just a 12-mile drive NW of Traverse City.”
Doug Hart and Michelle Jahraus have been part of the heart of the Cedar business community with their art gallery and nautical antiques business for many years. Jahraus is a fifth-generation Leelanau resident and a local artist who has been exhibiting in art shows around Traverse City and Leelanau for decades.
“We thank God for silver linings and look forward to your visit. Thank you for all the visits in the past and for moving ahead with us now,” Hart said in a Facebook post.
They’ve had to move due to health concerns and now have transitioned over to a space right near the house to help care for Michelle. She has fallen ill and is no longer able to paint.
“We do have quite a good inventory of Michelle’s paintings, and we grabbed some favorite ones that meant a lot to us and displayed them at home. Everything else is available in the shop. We had some good success moving some of those to people who collect and love Michelle’s art. The paintings are still available,” Hart said.
The Boaters antique shop has garnered a significant following over the last 20 years. Fresh pieces and inventory are available as he gets calls every week to check out one collection or another. The biggest movers are nautical ships that fit perfectly on the front porch or boathouse.

The shop has a large inventory of lanterns and lighthouses. Hart is keeping an eye out for old anchors and any other maritime items to possibly add to his collection.
“The older the better,” he said.
With the help of friends and family, Doug has moved the art gallery and his nautical business to a studio space at their home. Doug is determined to keep Michelle at home and care for her himself, but this comes with an emotional and financial burden for him.
Doug is also accepting scheduled visitors at his home studio, where he displays and sells Michelle’s artwork and his nautical antiques. Doug’s website is www.northernboater.net, where you can contact him directly.
They have raised nearly $12,000 as of date to help with costs.
