The Glen Lake Woman’s Club awarded seven college scholarships to graduating Glen Lake seniors at Awards Night Thursday, May 22.
Five of these students will attend Northwestern Michigan College (NMC), one will attend Alpena Community College, and one will attend Muskegon Community College. Awards will also be given to six second-year students and one adult Glen Lake graduate beginning at NMC.
“We are honored to award these scholarships to help such promising graduates on their future career paths,” said Virginia Woessner, chair of the Glen Lake Woman’s Club Scholarship Committee.
The Janice F. Freeman Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ethan Verschaeve. Mrs. Freeman was an active member of the Woman’s Club and chaired the Scholarship Committee for 14 years. The Jeanine Wessinger Dean Honorary Scholarship, created as a special tribute to Jeanine Dean, was awarded to Copper Ritter. Mrs. Dean is a former educator who served as the chairperson of the Woman’s Club Art Fair for 10 years.
Other graduating senior awards include scholarships to Jazmin Sequeira, Hunter Read, Peyton Brown, Madelynn Plamondon, and Jessie Pugh.
The six second-year scholarships were awarded to 2024 graduates Samantha Blough, Isaac Bright, Tyler Brown, Wyatt Bruske and Ella Flores and to 2023 graduate Opal Pousho. The club also awarded the first scholarship to an adult who did not attend college immediately after high school but has chosen to attend now. This was awarded to Weston Nowicki, a 2020 Glen Lake graduate. Since 1980, the Woman’s Club has awarded over $368,000 to 271 students to assist them on their path of higher learning. Funds for the college scholarships come from the profits from the annual Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair, the only fundraiser for the group. This year, the Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair will take place on July 16 at the Glen Arbor Town Hall.
The Glen Lake Woman’s Club was established in 1937 with the mission of fostering social, civic and educational programs. In addition to the annual Art Fair, other Woman’s Club projects include the improvement and beautification of the Chapel and grounds at Old Settlers Park, organization of the community Flag Raising Ceremony at Old Settlers Park (to be held on Thursday, July 4 this year), and a Christmas party for the residents of the Maple Valley Nursing Home in Maple City.
