The Leelanau Children’s Center’s 28th Annual Golf Scramble once again demonstrated that community support runs deep.

Held on Wednesday, May 21, the event attracted a full field of 80 golfers competing for prizes while raising over $12,000 for the Center’s Financial Aid Program. Community spirit shone brightly, despite cool temperatures and a light rain shower, as participants embraced the day with enthusiasm and friendly competition.

The winning team of Crosley Duckman, Bren Fries, Jamie Olsen, and Randy Woods claimed the top prize — a trophy crafted by the children at Leelanau Children’s Center, with Randy Woods stating that “I still cherish the trophy I won several years ago.”

The tournament recognized several other top performances: • Top Women’s Foursome: Carol Chambers, Nancy Hunter, Mary McKisson, and Lucy Schaub

• Top Mixed Foursome: Jack and Susan Hayes, who played with just two players

• Closest to the Pin Winners: Carol Chambers, Steve Chambers, Lucy Schaub, and Jim Munoz The event holds special significance for longtime supporters Lucy and Tim Schaub, along with Carol and Steve Chambers, who have participated every year since the scramble’s inception 28 years ago, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the center’s mission. A highlight of the day was the popular Bake Tent, where golfers could stop for coffee and sweet treats while receiving encouragement from the children attending the center.

Unlike other pre-K centers in the area, LCC operates without taxpayer support, relying solely on community generosity and fundraising efforts such as the annual golf scramble and Leelanau Grown, a Farm to Table Gala held at Aurora Cellars in July.

The Leelanau Children’s Center has been serving young children and families for 49 years and will celebrate its milestone 50th anniversary during the 20262027 academic year. This longevity reflects the center’s strong roots in the community and its essential role in supporting working families in Leelanau County.
