Many area businesses have substantial plans for the occasion this year, reviving the pastime when going out on New Year’s Eve was a big deal. *** A virus found a home in the county computer system about two weeks ago, resulting in fake emails requesting money being sent from at least one address of a local official that residents trust.

The virus caused other problems, too, including a disruption to some services provided to constituents. County officials responded as quickly as possible, and as of yesterday morning the system was back to full strength, according to county

They may need to invest tens of thousands of dollars to upgrade their barns, or go out of business.

Well it’s about time.

And right on time, too. Winter arrived Sunday night and Monday, the first official day of the season, and showed a promise to stick around in Leelanau County for a while. *** Spending by the county Road Commission are projected to decrease, according to a 1999 budget adopted Tuesday.

Another small business in the area expands this weeks with the announcement of Mark T. Osbun that his small factory at Glen Lake Narrows will employ from five to ten men all winter. *** Julius Bourdo, president of the Northport Chamber of Commerce, said today that considerable interest has been aroused there over the prospect of a Centennial celebration for this summer and that the matter will be brought up for discussion when the Chamber meets again the first Wednesday in January.

100 YEARS AGO December 27, 1923

Mr. Pederson, of Chicago, has purchased the store building’s in this village formerly owned by Germain Cordes. *** Mr. and Mrs. J. Prause spent Xmas with relatives at Traverse City. *** Mr. and Mrs. Carson Warner entertained guests for Christmas dinner.
