Federal assistance for the Leelanau Peninsula’s eroding shoreline due to high water levels of the Great Lakes may be on the horizon. A group of local municipalities are banding together to each draft similar resolutions that involve asking Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the state legislature to declare Michigan’s shoreline a disaster area in hopes of procuring funds from U.S. Congress and U.S. President Donald Trump. *** Bailey Rosinski will spend the next 22 to 50 years in prison for her role in the robbery and assault of her grandparents in Cedar on Jan. 10, 2019. Rosinski, 25, of Cedar was convicted last month in 13th Circuit Court of armed robbery, assault with intent to commit armed robbery, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Dan Matthies is hoping for the best, but bracing for a secondstraight harvest from cold-ravaged vines. “I’m sure we’ll have some damage,” said Dan Matthies of Chateau Fontaine near Lake Leelanau. “You never know until spring when we can get out and dissect some of the buds.” Record cold temperatures this month have at least twice dropped below the threshold at which vines sustain damage, which is minus 10. *** Andrea Slater doesn’t mind that her friends call her the 'crazy cat lady' or the 'cat whisperer.' Long a champion of all animals, but especially cats, Slater now has a plan to spay and neuter several feral felines that are inhabiting Fishtown. The trap-neuter-return plan includes trapping about seven feral cats that are living under the Village Cheese Shanty, sending them to a local veterinarian to be spayed or neutered, and after a few days rest, returning them to Fishtown.

Warnes Grocery has changed hands. A 73-year-old tradition in Glen Arbor will continue, but under a different name and with new services for customers. Warnes Grocery, which opened in Glen Arbor in 1923, was sold recently. The new name of the store will be Glen Arbor Grocery. *** A new law has broadened the enforcement of the seat belt law. Changes in the state’s vehicle restraint law could result in a citation or worse if you fail to buckle up. Police will be allowed next week to pull over drivers who fail to fasten their seat belts.

50 YEARS AGO

February 27, 1975

Benjamin R. Boyd, 34, is the new Leelanau County Probate Court Probation officer. Chosen from a slate of some 30 applicants, Boyd has a master’s degree in literature from Central Michigan University with college credit beyond that degree from the University of Wisconsin. He taught high school for one year at Port Huron High School in Port Huron and five years at Central Michigan University, where he served as sports director, and as advisor to various student groups. *** A contest with a cash prize of $50 for the best entry for a proposed Leelanau County Chamber of Commerce emblem design (logo) was announced this week by the Leelanau County Chamber of Commerce. Deadline for entry is March 18.

75 YEARS AGO March 2, 1950

The Northport Wildcats, runners- up for the local Class C crown, reversed the tables Tuesday night to knock off the Class C champs, Leelanau for Boys of Glen Arbor, in the opening round of the District tournaments at Traverse City.The score was 50-47. St. Francis topped Elk Rapids 57-40 in the nightcap so in the finals Saturday Northport will face St. Francis of Traverse City. *** The Empire-Glen Lake airport is not being considered as part of the new Air Force base at Empire, Army Engineers reported this week. Engineers have looked over the port, however, with a view that during construction small planes carrying personnel to and from the District office in Chicago might land there. No decision was reached, however, on the practicability of the port for this purpose.

100 YEARS AGO February 26, 1925

Miss Lillian Weller of East Leland underwent and operation for appendicitis last Saturday, is doing nicely. *** B.N. Pickard has returned from Ann Arbor hospital much improved in health. *** Mr. and Mrs. Ole Larson of Suttons Bay will celebrate their Silver wedding today. Congratulations!
