Local man arrested for murder

A 63-year-old county man was arraigned yesterday in Traverse City on open murder charge in connection with a cold case in Grand Traverse County.

Steven Gary Koon was scheduled to be arraigned in 86th District yesterday afternoon one day after the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest in the case that has been cold since 1989.

Linda Meteer’s body was discovered in Hoosier Valley in Blair Township on Thursday, April 27, 1989, and her murder went unsolved for nearly 36 years.

She was 41 at the time of her death, the mother of five children, a sister, and a daughter.

In 1989 an investigation task for comprised as officers from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department and the Michigan State Police was formed and began investigating the homicide. The group worked continued to work for several years to identify and criminally charge as suspect but was unsuccessful.

In December 2024, the sheriff’s office asked for tips on the unsolved murder.
