To the editor:
I took a walk today on the new section of bike trail being installed by the Leelanau Conservancy on the east side of Wheeler Rd - right next to NPS land and my home.
I was shocked and saddened by the methods they are using bulldozers, switchbacks up the very steepest parts of the hill, and bermed trails around 6 feet wide. These are most certainly not friendly trails intended for average riders, nordic skiers, or even hikers - it’s a bicycle park race track up there, plain and simple.
I have used many trails, and supported Conservancy efforts for years, and we were very excited to hear they had purchased this property, but something has changed with this parcel. Development and attracting donors seems to be their priority, rather than conservation and careful use. It appears money has pulled them away from their stated mission.
Make no mistake, the neighborhood has nothing against bike trails, and does not want to be in a battle with the Conservancy, but what choice do we have when they are changing our rural neighborhood right before our eyes? What’s next - bike races and large events to attract donors? Buy more land and make it even bigger?
I encourage you to walk up the hill and take a look - and see if you would define their actions as conservation or development. Then - please express your feelings to the Leelanau Conservancy.
