To the editor:
Since the 2020 election, election clerks and workers have been abused and harassed. Some have found white powder in their mail, including fentanyl. Many others have received death threats that include their children.
Our public servants are not in it for money of fame. They work long hours to give us our democratic voices. Most of this violent behavior is due to the lies, disinformation and incitement from the candidates ( and those who do their bidding) who lost their elections.
The 2020 election was the largest and most secure, transparent, and verified election in American history. There were more paper ballots and audits than ever, confirming the results. Also, there were more pre-and post-election litigations confirming the result and clarifying election rules and law.
Three years later, there has not been any evidence presented to courts to indicate election problems. Yet the abuse and threats continue.
It’s OK that many citizens were disappointed from the 2020 outcome, that does not make them insurrectionists. Unfortunately, they are now the targets of those people who continued to feed them lies and disinformation.
Things are changing for the better, due to accountability. Many people have profited off these lies, seeking power and influence. Some of them are being brought to justice, both criminally and civilly. Results of some of these cases have been large damages and disbarment proceedings. Maybe we can create an incentive structure, where those who continue to spread lies no longer benefit?
