Historical film at The Bay

A documentary preview screening of “The Search for Anna & Levi: A Lost History of Black Homesteaders in Leelanau County” is set for Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Bay Community Theatre.

The Leelanau Historical Society (LHS) proudly presents the powerful documentary that sheds light on an untold chapter of local history and the broader journey of African Americans who settled in the Midwest.

Directed by Joe VanderMeulen, the document features interviews with descendants, local historians, and regional experts, providing a comprehensive and heartfelt look at the legacy of Black homesteaders in the region.

The project was inspired by the research of Kevin Brooks, LHS’s 2023 Leelanau Press Research Fellowship Recipient. As Brooks dug into his Leelanau roots, he discovered a connection to the Johnson family. A team of researchers collaborated to uncover this true story and make connections with the living descendants.

The event will be held at 2 p.m. at the Bay Theatre. Presale tickets will be available soon on the Bay Theatre website.
