LEELANAU HISTORY

5 YEARS AGO February 13, 2020

The owners of some 1,200 properties fronting Lake Leelanau in six of Leelanau County’s 11 townships won’t likely be singled out to help pay for ongoing maintenance of the Leland Dam anytime soon. Nonetheless, a major maintenance project will be required this year to cope with record high water in Lake Michigan that has been flooding a dam control room located along the Leland River just below The Cove, a seasonal restaurant in Leland. *** A moderate winter is not helping to lower the highest Lake Michigan water levels in recorded history. High water is causing problems across the state. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week convened a high water task force to focus on erosion, and the Village of Northport is hoping that a state grant will help fund an estimated $597,849 marina project needed this spring to

keep its harbor house and fuel pumps above water.

The contentious issue of county government sponsorship of nonprofit requests for Tribal “2%” grants isn’t going away. The County Board of Commissioners voted 4-3 Tuesday to continue with its policy of only forwarding grant requests originating from county departments on to the Tribal Council of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. *** The level of “2%” funding allocated this week by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians indicates that video gaming revenues from the tribe’s two casinos are declining. However, the two largest payouts did go to governments in Leelanau County. In all, requests from eight governmental units in Leelanau were funded. *** Get your union suit out and bundle up. The communities of Glen Arbor and Empire are celebrating the season in the great outdoors this weekend. “Dress warmly,” said Bob Smith, owner of the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor, where a high temperature of 13 is forecast this weekend. “All you need is one big fish and in this case, size does matter.”

Fire heavily damaged Boone’s Prime Time Pub. Although the Suttons Bay area has been plagued by the work of an arsonist, fire officials are confident that the latest blaze was unrelated. The fire has been traced to an electrical box in the basement.

*** Members of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians will vote next Thursday, Feb. 24, in their first ever primary election. The election was needed because a record 34 people are running for three Tribal Council seats, and seven are running for tribal chairman.

Glen Lake Community Schools Board of Education has tentatively asked for a budget of over $1,000,000 for 1975-76. The tentative budget is $72,000 higher that the 1974-75 final budget which totaled $943,565. *** A ban on parking on M-109 at the Dunes Climb entrance road to the D.H. Day State Park east of Glen Haven (Leelanau County), was announced today by the Department of State Highways and Transportation. The order prohibits parking on M-109 for 1,200 feet south and 2,000 feet north of the entrance road.

Word came to this newspaper today from Washington, D.C. that the army installation to be started soon at Empire will cost around one million dollars. There will be nineteen buildings, with accompanying streets and utilities. It is hoped that the work will be done and the plant in full swing by mid-November. *** The March of Dimes drive in Leelanau County brought $943.78 into the Infantile paralysis fund, according to William Bonek of Buttons Bay, county chairman. Empire and Lake Leelanau schools have not yet reported.
