In the months ahead, the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners will hear from various governmental organizations hoping to present funding requests to voters in the 2020 elections. At its executive meeting in February, the county board is slated to hear from Leelanau County Road Commission Manager Justin Kelenske and Finance Director Joe Nedow about voter renewal of a half-mill property tax levy. *** Northport residents opposed to the village ordinances allowing both medical-marijuana and recreational-marijuana facilities may have their say in voting booths this November. Village of Northport clerk Joni Scott said she has validated the signatures on two petitions seeking to repeal the village’s opt-in to medical marijuana and to prohibit recreational-marijuana establishments in the village.

The late Brian Nachazel’s sister, Rebecca Goff, read from her victim’s impact statement through tears Monday during the sentencing of Tyler LeVeque. “I just never thought something like this would happen to my family,” Goff read. “My family is now broken forever and we will never be the same.” The courtroom was packed, with many people standing or sitting in the jury box or on extra chairs that were brought in. *** The head of Leelanau County’s Construction Code Authority, Steve Haugen, remains convinced that the presumed current owner of Sugar Loaf may sell the long-shuttered ski resort to somebody “local” soon. But don’t tell that to Eneliko “Liko” Sean Smith of Las Vegas. Much to the consternation of Sugar Loaf’s many fans, Smith resurfaced online earlier this month to claim that he’s back in the game and on the verge of acquiring Sugar Loaf.

However, the owners say they will not allow a jail to be built on the property. *** In a related development, members of the County Planning Commission have prepared a memo sent to county commissioners outlining their required — and expanded — role in siting county facilities.

Leelanau County Road Commission has been told to expect an 8% cut in its quarterly road funds from the State of Michigan which it will receive in mid-February, James Gilbo, county engineer told the Enterprise Wednesday. The cut in funds is part of a cutback in all state road monies derived from the gasoline taxes, due to the energy crunch and higher prices for gasoline have cut into sales. *** Elmwood Township Board plans to come up with some kind of decision at its regular meeting on Monday Febraury 10, on the controversial request by Grand Traverse County to pay nearly $5,000 plus a fee for each ambulance run for ambulance services provided to Elmwood by Grand Traverse County.

Six Leelanau County commercial fishermen returned Tuesday from a two-day meeting of the Michigan Fish Producers Association in Traverse City, convinced that at long last both state and federal governments are actually starting a determined fight on the sea lamprey.
*** Stanley Rae of Traverse City must stand trial in Circuit Court at Leland next month, charged with having a loaded gun in his car in Cleveland Township in 1948, in spite of Judge Charles L. Brown’s decision last week that the gun may not be used as evidence.
