Leelanau ice rinks:

Local ice rinks are up and running around Leelanau County for all to enjoy as temperatures remain ideal half way through January.

Community ice rinks around the county include Suttons Bay, Leland, and Northport.

Jesse Fox of Suttons Bay has been building the ice rink for the past five winters since taking over the reigns from his father Edward and Bill Perkins. Roughly five years ago the ice rink also got a new tarp that has served as the base of the ice rink.

“Last year, we didn’t have anybody ice skating at all. This year has been better,” he said.

Ice Rink Park is located on 214 W. Broadway St.

Each year, the Suttons Bay-Bingham Township Fire Department, fills the closed off area with 55,000 gallons of water.

Once the center freezes, Fox smooths out the edges for all to enjoy.

Fox has always been interested in pond hockey while providing a space for kids and family to skate and enjoy the ice rink.

“We have to get the next generation skating,” Fox said.

Every Tuesday at 6:45 p.m., the ice rink has league play where locals gather to face-off in friendly matches with fire pits and music playing for visitors to enjoy.

“It’s just a good time,” Fox said. The Suttons Bay ice rink is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The Leland Ice Rink is another beloved community resource that offers a fun environment for ice skating, hockey, and social activities. While the community rink has a dedicated group of community volunteers, known as the “Zambronis,” who help maintain and fund the rink, the community still needs fundraising support to keep the rink running smoothly.

So far this year, a Go-Fund me raised $1,375 with a $1,800 goal.

“By contributing to our fundraising efforts, you will be helping to maintain the rink’s operations, make necessary repairs and upgrades, and ensure that it remains a vibrant and popular destination for our community. Your support is greatly appreciated,” Jeff Keen said in the Go-Fund Me campaign.

Northport’s ice rink is located at Braman Hill park.
