The second of two phases of sidewalk improvements in Lake Leelanau and Leland will go forward in 2014.
The Leland Township Board voted unanimously Dec. 11 to proceed with the improvements — a $121,524 project.
A public hearing is set for Jan. 8, during the township’s first meeting of the new year.
Planned improvements include replacement of sidewalks on Grand Avenue from Pearl Street to Juniper Trail; M-204 from St. Joseph Street to St. Mary Street; and River Street from Lake Street to the public restrooms.
The cost of repair, replacement, removal and/or construction of a sidewalk will be charged to affected property owners and with residential property owners contributing 40% with the remainder paid by the township. The required contributions for commercial properties is 80%.
This is the second of two phases of the project. Last year sidewalks were replaced in Lake Leelanau on Main Street sections by N.J.’s; the south side of Meinrad between Gertrude and St. Mary’s Street and on the north side of Meinrad by Jaffe’s Resale and Consignment.
In Leland sidewalks were replaced on Main Street between Thompson Street and Pearl Street (various sections on both sides of the street) and River Street including River Street and Grand Avenue intersection.
