S-B Twp. appointments made

The Suttons Bay Township Board approved committee appointments and its 2025 meeting schedule at its December regular meeting. This meeting had been rescheduled from Dec. 11 to Dec. 18 due to poor weather conditions.

The board re-appointed Treasurer Dorothy Petroskey as its representative on the Suttons Bay-Bingham Fire & Rescue Authority board, for a term ending Aug. 31, 2027.

They also re-appointed Patti Miller, Rhoda Johnson, Gary Thornton, and Tom Koernke to the township planning commission, for three-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2027. Pete Ostrowski and Mary Nixon also had their appointments on the zoning Board of Appeals renewed for another three years. The board also appointed Courtney Yaple to the parks and recreation committee for a three-year term.

In June, the board moved its regular meetings from 5:15 to 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, and they will continue meeting at 6 next year. They will hold their meetings at the same venue: the township office at 95 W. Fourth Street in Hansen Plaza.

Also at their December regular meeting, the board:

• Renewed an agreement with Suttons Bay Village splitting the water fee for making the titular ice rink in Ice Rink Park on Broadway and Lincoln streets.

• Looked ahead to fall 2025, allowing the Cherry Capital Cycling Club to use Steimel Park on Stony Point Road as a stop on their Leelanau Harvest Tour. The club is now allowed to place two small tents, portable restrooms, and a handwashing station in the park in September. The club plans to use the park as a food stop from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 20.

• Agreed to collect summer property taxes in the township for Northwest Education Services, formerly Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, later this year. Per the agreement, the school district will set the millage rate in June, and the township will collect the taxes July 1.
