Vacant seat on S-B School Board

The Suttons Bay Board of Education has a vacant seat to fill by appointment.

At Monday’s monthly board meeting, members thanked trustees Greg Gurka and Gerald DeVol for their service. Gurka was appointed to the board in 2019 and DeVol was elected in 2020. Neither sought reelection.

“The open/vacant seat will be filled by board appointment,” Superintendent Casey Petz said. “At this point in time, we do have one board member that has indicated that he would return to the board to fill the seat by appointment, and the district will also publicly post for applicants.

“Details on that will be coming out later this month with an application deadline in late December, early January.”

Douglas Comer was elected Nov. 5 and will take office next month. The remaining board members are Chris DeJong, Liz Venie, Lee Grant, Maureen Fletcher and Eric Mattis.

In other business during the 45-minute session the board:

• Approved an overnight trip from the Business Professionals of America for their regional competition at Central Michigan University Dec. 16.

• Approved the overnight trip request from First Robotics for their competitions in Lake City, Feb. 28 through March 2, and at Saginaw Valley State University, April 3-5.

Suttons Bay Robotics is also scheduled to compete in Traverse City March 13-15.

• Approved the hiring of Edward Fantozzi as varsity boys soccer coach and Sarah Murphy, middle school girls basketball coach.

• Recognized maintenance worker Luis Diaz and second/ third grade teacher Michael Pearson as employees of the month.
