Under intense scrutiny from would-be neighbors and the Elmwood Township Planning Commission, developers of an apartment complex that could bring more than 600 “workforce housing” rental units to Leelanau County, have withdrawn an application for their project. Elmwood Township zoning administrator Sara Kopriva received a letter Monday from Jon Laureto of REI Construction Consultants indicating that his company is no longer seeking a site plan review for the Brewery Creek Apartments project it brought to the Planning Commission in October. *** Doors are open at West Side Community Church to members grieving the death of former pastor John Clark. Clark was found dead Monday in the woods near his Benzie County home, a single gunshot in his head. Benzie Sheriff Ted Schendel said his department was dispatched mid-morning to a possible suicide. Clark, former lead pastor at West Side Community Church in Solon Township, was found with a gunshot wound to the head, Schendel said.

An announcement will be forthcoming “soon” about the sale of Sugar Loaf Resort to “all local people,” according to the resort’s current owner, Remo Polselli of downstate Bloomfield Hills. Polselli spoke to the Enterprise this week about the status of Sugar Loaf, which has garnered much publicity and speculation over its future since closing nearly 15 years ago. Officially, a lapsed Nevada corporation known as Rock Investment Advisors, L.L.C., purportedly headed by Polselli... *** A former Tribal Chairman of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, George Edward Bennett, died Tuesday afternoon on his 86th birthday. Bennett served as Tribal Chairman 1996-2000 and also served terms as a member of Tribal Council. Bennett was one of the original members of an interim Tribal Council that was established in 1980 shortly after the tribe won federal recognition.

Each of the 3,542 members of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians received $6,960 in “per-capita payments” last Thursday — a record. *** A summer resident from Ohio is seeking a declaratory judgment that the right-of-way adjacent to their property in the Village of Northport is not a “public beach.”

December 12, 1974

“Driving is a full time job.” Ernest F. Saunders of Trumbull Road should know. He’s recently completed a record of one million miles of accident free driving for his employer, Michigan Bell Telephone Co. Saunders who plans to retire soon was presented a National Safety Council Million Mile safe driving award Thursday, Dec. 5 at MBT’s Company garage on Hasting Street in Traverse City. *** It is reported that at least one of the D.H. Day heirs has stated that a new lawsuit is being considered and if decided upon would be filed in Leelanau County Circuit Court on behalf of the D.H. Day heirs to challenge the action of the Michigan Legislature in transferring D.H. Day State Park near Empire to the National Park Service.

75 YEARS AGO December 9, 1948

A small angry group of Cedar residents gathered at the town hall there Friday night and agreed to pay a reward of $50 for information or evidence which leads to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons who have destroyed certain road signs in Leelanau county. The signs described were located: one at Schopieray’s corner in Kasson township, three at the Elmwood school corner, junction of 61b and M-72, and one at the junction of 651 and M-22 at Good Harbor. All were directional signs.

*** The Coast Guard Station al North Manitou Shoals closed Sunday morning for the winter season. Commanding officer John Hahn is spending a brief leave at Northport with his wife prior to reporting to his temporary winter duty at Traverse City base. E. J. Liberty will also be stationed for winter duty’ at Traverse City.

100 YEARS AGO December 11, 1924

The following gentleman are in attendance of the hearing of the abandonment of the M&N, E.R.R, which is being held in Lansing today: Theo Esch, Elmer Billmen, George Mason and Hon. John Santo. *** The wedding of Miss Delia Alpers and Mr. Herald Egeler of East Leland was announced at the Lutheran church last Sunday, which will take place December 18th.
