Erosion which has eaten away the shoreline at Christmas Cove Park may soon be addressed.
The Leelanau Township Board Tuesday night unanimously approved hiring Machin Engineering in Traverse City to conduct preliminary engineering design work up to $20,000 at the park. The motion was made by township Treasurer Denise Dunn and seconded by Trustee Gary Fredrickson. *** A Special Assessment District (SAD) consisting of all Lake Leelanau waterfront property owners will be reactivated to pay for repairs and ongoing maintenance of the countyowned Leland Dam which controls water levels in the inland lake. The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners voted 6-1 Tuesday night to begin the process of reactivating the SAD by authorizing the county Equalization Department to review records and create an updated list of “tax parcels” to be included in the district.

A Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office investigation into alleged forgery of a quit claim deed on Sugar Loaf Resort has been forwarded to the FBI for action. Meanwhile, a “sheriff’s sale” of the long-shuttered ski resort is still scheduled for tomorrow — although nobody is betting that a sale will actually occur this week. Leelanau County Deputy Sheriff Duane Wright earlier this month executed a search warrant issued by the county prosecutor’s office after the county Register of Deeds received a “quit claim deed”... *** Leelanau has a new road commissioner whose family has a long history with governing in the county. County commissioners also took no action to enlarge the Leelanau County Road Commission from three to five members, which apparently put off any change until at least the 2016 election cycle. Commissioners, meeting Tuesday evening, voted to appoint Jim Calhoun of Suttons Bay to the seat left by the death of Glen M. Noonan, who had served since 1973. The term ends in 2016.

Leelanau County’s longestserving elected official is retiring. Suttons Bay Township Clerk Rosemarie (Moe) Kalchik will step down effective Dec. 31. Kalchik has served as township clerk for more than 41 years. *** The Suttons Bay Village Council is considering dredging the village marina next year — a project that could cost taxpayers nearly $250,000, according to officials.

Northport and Leland may have sewage treatment works someday, to replace present relience on individual septic tank systems. But it’s likely to be a considerable wait. As of now, Northport is number 273 out of more than 500 small villages and cities that have applied for federal sewage treatment woks grants. Leland is number 257. That information was passed along to the Northport Village Council last Thursday night by Robert Buehrer, Village President. *** Elmwood Township voters will probably be asked to approve one quarter mill to support an ambulance service in cooperation with nearby Grand Traverse County which presently accommodates Elmwood Township with ambulance service. The Board was recently asked by Grand Traverse, which is taxing its residents a quartermill for the service to tax Elmwood Township residents for the service they receive.

The Federal government in the next few months will spend $35,000 on Grand Traverse Light, the beacon on Lighthouse Point north of Northport. Frederick Leslie, officer in charge of the station, received this information this week. The 96-year-old lighthouse will use electric current to replace the kerosene vapor lamp it has burned for more than half a century. *** County Treasurer Everett DeLong Wednesday received a check for $11,207.35, Leelanau county’s share of the second and final payment of primary school money for 1948-49. The division is made on the basis of $4.51 for each child recorded in the 1947 school census.
