Ready or not, the holidays are hurtling towards us. The Northport Tree is being decorated and readied for the season. Northport resident Scott Cain, owner of Cain Design and Construction, was up in the bucket truck himself this past week, hanging lights and giant ornaments. Thanksgiving is just two weeks from today. Northport School is holding its annual Community Thanksgiving Lunch on Friday, November 22, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the school. It will be roast turkey with all the fixings.
It’s really hard not to gain weight this time of year. Last week, I burned 2,000 calories. That will be the last time I leave brownies in the oven when I nap.
Hanukkah is almost as late as it can be this year, starting at sunset on December 25, and ending at sunset on January 2. The first day of Hanukkah can be as early as November 28 and as late as December 27.
Try not to be overwhelmed by all of the upcoming holiday activities. When I think about it, I have heard of people being overwhelmed and underwhelmed, but never properly whelmed.
Mark your calendars for all of the fun events over the holidays. Saturday, November 30 is the Northport Tree Lighting, with a full day of activities leading up to it. The Leelanau Township Library in Northport has children’s activities that day including crafts, writing letters to Santa, cookies (eating cookies is an activity in my book), and more!
The Holiday Arts and Crafts Show, organized by the Northport Arts Association (NAA), goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in two venues — the Willowbrook Mill and the Village Arts Building. Enjoy shopping for holiday décor, pottery, fiber arts, needlework, jewelry, photography, paintings, greeting cards, books, aromatherapy, herbals, ornaments, wood work, maple syrup, homemade pet treats, original artwork, fresh Christmas wreaths, and more. All this leads up to the Tree Lighting at 6 p.m.
It’s also deer hunting season. Good luck if you are hunting. Everyone, be smart and be safe. Do you know the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts? Beer Nuts are $4.99, and deer nuts are under a buck.
Thursday, Dec. 5, from 2 to 3 p.m., is “Frost and Fusion: A Seasonal Art Showcase””, by Northport School students in grades K – 12. It is open to the public, and the students will be there to answer questions about their works.
I always liked art class a lot better than chemistry. I could tell a chemistry joke here, but I know I wouldn’t get a reaction.
Saturday, December 7, is the annual Holiday Treats and Yard Sale Treasures from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Trinity Church in Northport. It is a bake sale with all kinds of homemade holiday treats and yard sale treasures. All profits go to the Northport Women’s Club educational grants.
I enjoy shopping locally. Shopping on-line can be so frustrating. I looked up lighters and all they had was 13,749 matches.
Sunday, Dec. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. is the Annual Northport Community Band and Village Voices Holiday Concert. It is always a great event, full of holiday cheer. And cookies afterwards!
If that’s not enough holiday music — and you can never get enough holiday music— on Wednesday, December 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. is the Northport School Holiday Concert in the school auditorium. Students in grades K-5 will sing familiar holiday tunes, followed by the middle and high school band performances. It’s free admission, and everyone is welcome.
If this seems like a lot of dates to keep track of, you can always go the Northport Omena Calendar to get all of this information.
As a columnist, I find words interesting. I think it’s ironic that there are five syllables in monosyllabic. You also might have noticed that I like to talk about happy events. That’s because stories of untold suffering never stay that way.
The Community Coffee hours continue every Thursday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Omena Historical Society.
In case you hadn’t noticed, I am celebrating National Aid and Abet a Punster Day in this week’s column. It is actually on November 8 every year, but there wasn’t room in last week’s column.
Happy Birthday this week to Lucy Loveless Wingfield, Jane Saxton, Rick Keye, Chris Verdery, Dave Johnson, and Jake Biederman. Happy Anniversary to Mike and Debbie Mann.
