Not everyone in Leelanau County was complaining about the huge piles of snow facing them Tuesday morning. Liz Fay’s two preschool children seemed to think the snow this week was a lot nicer than the snow that hit Leelanau County last Thursday. It was fluffier. “Playing in the snowbanks was a lot easier this week,” said Fay, a full-time wife and mother and a part-time registered nurse at Munson Medical Center. *** Usually Leelanau County is considered one geographical unit. On Monday and Tuesday, though, there were two Leelanau County’s — the parts receiving up to three feet of snow and the parts that didn’t. The western part of Leelanau County from Northport down to Empire saw the impacts of a lake-effect snow event that closed Glen Lake Community School at noon on Monday and resulted in numerous stranded vehicles

Plans by a member of the beer-making Anheuser-Busch family to expand a marina at the CenterPointe Building in Elmwood Township may have fallen victim to a failed millage vote last week that could force the township’s fire and rescue department to cease operations by the end of the year. The unusual juxtaposition of issues stems from the fact that one of the biggest and most reliable sources of revenue for the township is its municipal marina. *** Predictions of “tracking snow” bode well for deer hunters in Leelanau County as they begin to upgrade their weapons. Archery season for deer will end Friday, with firearms season taking over. “There’s some nice bucks out there,” said Wes Smith, who operates the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor with his father Bob. “I shot a doe, but I’ve seen a few nice bucks, but it’s bow season, and that’s tough.”

Tribal officials are planning a convenience store and gas station on M-22 across from the Leelanau Sands Casino. Tentatively named “Eagle Town Market,” the 3,456-square-foot facility will cost an estimated $1,083,888 to construct, according to tribal officials. *** Suttons Bay grocer Dave Hansen plans to begin construction of a new, larger Hansen Foods store this spring on an 8.1-acre parcel he bought near his current store. The parcel was purchased from Tom Roen, who owns the new “Super Wash.” *** A resurrected county septic ordinance was flushed away by county commissioners Tuesday who provided no support for passage in its newest form. The proposed health code would have required septic system evaluations when properties were sold.

Some official comment on the use of off the road motor vehicles such as snowmobiles, motorcycles and minibikes in the Cathead Bay area of Leelanau State Park has been furnished by Joe Martin, manager of the Park. Martin notes that use of the state park lands without written permission by operators of such vehicles is illegal, and then only permitted on designated roads. *** Elmwood Township, through its supervisor Paul Watkoski has asked the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to set up certain requirements and limitations for the operation of the controversial Traverse City coal supply dock on West Bay in Greilickville. The letter which was approved by the Township Board at its regular meeting Monday night was sent to George Little of the DNR Cadillac office.

The biggest army of deer hunters that this county has ever known will march into the woods and swamps Monday to greet the opening dawn of deer season. Local conservation officials expect that nearly 3,000 persons will hunt in Leelanau County this year and best guesses are that approximately one in four will take home a buck. *** A movement to secure a greater share in weight and gas tax for Leelanau and other counties with small populations got under way Tuesday night in Gaylord. Northwest Michigan Road Committee Association originated the plan, which, according to one source, may mean as much as $50,000 a year more for this county.

We trust Bob will bring home a deer.
