The next Elmwood Township Planning Commission meeting could be a doozy. If the size of the crowd and the emotions in the room at a Nov. 20 planning commission meeting are anything like what was on display at a privately-organized neighborhood meeting Tuesday night in the Elmwood Township Hall. *** The Leland Dam Authority on will review bids on a “flood wall” to keep water out of a control room at the base of the Leland Dam and may recommend that everyone owning waterfront on Lake Leelanau help pay for ongoing maintenance of the dam. The county-owned-and-operated dam regulates water levels in Lake Leelanau in keeping with a court order. The Leland River drains the waters of Lake Leelanau into Lake Michigan over the dam.

Democratic candidates for the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners have taken in 150 percent more in campaign funds than their Republican counterparts, according to campaign finance statements filed last week with the Leelanau County clerk’s office. Democratic candidates reported $22,442 in campaign revenue in filings last week, compared to $8,899 for Republicans. Combined, more than $31,000 has been raised for County Board races. *** Leelanau Township will not act as a pass-through agency for a $29,000 grant sought by Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN), the non-profit agency that runs two area food pantries. According to township Supervisor Doug Scripps, the township attorney nixed the plan, which would have had the township enter into a contract to receive a 2-percent grant from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and then pass the money on to LCN.

Some 436 people in Leelanau County have rolled up their sleeves to get flu shots. That’s a much better turnout for shots than a year ago, when it seemed everybody either had the flu or knew someone who did. *** Just who owns a communications tower in Kasson Township has been the subject of talks between the county and Frank E. Noverr since May. Leelanau entered into a 10-year “agreement” with NPI Wireless on Aug. 21, 1997, in which the company was asked to build a new tower, turn it over to the county for $1 and in exchange occupy the site “rent free” until its investment was recouped.

Suttons Bay High School’s Building Trades Class, which has built two houses up to now which have since been sold by the school, has taken on a different type of project this year — constructing a ski slope, warming house and skating area in the Village-owned 30-acre Bahle Park. *** Empire Township is seeking approval of increasing its limitation on taxes by an amount not exceeding one mill for a five year period Township Supervisor Hal Pendleton explained why in an interview with the editor of the Enterprise. “At our last annual meeting the requested budget for the fire department and other township needs was about $3,500 over. As a result we had to cut this amount from the various departments.”

Morris Schwartz of Leland assumed his new duties Monday as manager of the Sugar Loaf sports area. Club officials appointed him last week to assume all responsibility, including the hiring of men. This is Schwarz’s third season at Sugar Loaf. He had previously been a maintenance worker. *** NIGHT LIFE IN LELAND Deer have breakfasted on gardens in the village of Leland the past week. Last Thursday night a pair of bucks, replete with antlers so-o-o wide, we’re walking up the Main street at about 11 p.m. “Let’s have breakfast at Mrs. Cordes,’’ one of them said. “Oh, no,” the other objected. “Let’s eat at Captain Cook’s.” They compromised, ate a little in both gardens.
