Record warm temps recorded

Last year, during Halloween, it was snowing. This year is much different, with temperatures drifting into the mid-70s throughout the majority of the week to give one last blast of warm fall and summer before the winter comes.

Leelanau County has not seen significant rainfall since July, but some relief could be on the way soon.

Today (Halloween) calls for off-and-on showers, while ghouls and goblins will still be hunting for their sweet treats.

Gaylord National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Gillen said the area is experiencing record-setting heat.

“There have been recordsetting temperatures all across northern Michigan,” he said. “We are potentially getting into a more active weather pattern. There will be on and off showers for Halloween with a relatively dry Friday and Saturday, then rain most likely through the middle of next week.”

Traverse City recorded a record temperature Tuesday, eclipsing 80 degrees. The previous record for October 29 was 75 degrees in 1989.

Northwest Horticulture Extension Director Nikki Rothwell said farmers have been calling wondering about the warm weather and what to do.

“Watering wouldn’t hurt, it would be less stressed going into winter,” Rothwell said.
