Kate Bardenhagen and David L. (Davey) Noonan have six children under age 10 between them.

But they differ on how they will vote Nov. 5 on the proposed early childhood services millage. “I don’t want to pay for another millage,” said Noonan, whose family has farmland in the southwest corner of the county. “It’s taking money from my pocket that I use to feed my children … and I won’t be able to use for another purpose.” *** Leelanau Township planners will tonight get their first look at a proposal to redevelop the former Timber Shores Resort property just south of Northport. Downstate developer Walter G. Johnson and his team will appear before the Leelanau Township Planning Commission for a pre-application conference to share plans for the new Timber Shores RV Resort, a 335site park.

Six local men have tossed their hats in the ring for a seat on the Leelanau County Road Commission. Included are a former county commissioner, two cousins whose family lineage traces back to the commission, the son of now-deceased Road Commissioner Glen Noonan and the man who lost to Noonan in the 2012 Primary election. The names of the candidates are James Calhoun, of Northport; William Calhoun, of Suttons Bay; Philip Egeler, of Suttons Bay; Robert Joyce, of Omena; Robert Noonan, of Empire; and Mark Walter, of Bingham Township. *** Cheer up, Leelanau County. Following 10 months of cold or cooler days with more snow and rain than normal, temperatures are predicted to be moderate, according to a long-range forecast released by the National Weather Service (NWS). And the NWS is predicting sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s this weekend, which would provide one last opportunity to take in fall color. Some say color season has just about run its course in Leelanau, although plenty remains in many of the county’s hillsides.

The Suttons Bay School District is hoping to receive an additional $320,837 in state funds through a Michigan Court of Appeals ruling last week. Other county school districts will also benefit from the ruling, handed down to 255 Michigan school districts that sued the state for underfunding in what has become known as the “Durant II” lawsuit. *** A 20-year-old bench warrant came back to haunt a Traverse City man arrested for drunk driving in connection with a property damage accident. Roger W. Paupor, 39, was denied bond in District Court Friday by Judge James McCormick, who cited a 1980 bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for a court hearing.

Only a remnant of a wooden wall that once stretched the entire length of the Village Park Beach at Empire remains. The wall was destroyed by severe erosion which washed away nearly 200 feet (depth) of Empire Village Park beach and now threatens the two tennis courts, problems of flooding at Empire’s South Bar Lake which parallels Lake Michigan at Empire. *** The Suttons Bay Rescue Vehicle Fund which was set up to raise funds to buy a new rescue vehicle for the Suttons Bay area has now reached $12,800, Undersheriff David Gill of Suttons Bay who is the chairman of the fund drive, announced Wednesday.

Mr. Dame has been working in the local office as Classified Clerk since 1935 except for two years during World War II. These he spent in the army overseas as a Technical Sergeant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Isa Dame and with his wife, Mrs. Edna Dame, a local grade school instructor, has recently completed a new modern home at the north village outskirts. *** After snow flurries flurried off and on all day Sunday, Leelanau County settled down to an old fashioned winter night. Two inches of snow fell in two hours and the ground turned white. Unfortunately it happened after the kids were in bed. Monday morning saw most of the county under a white blanket which melted by noon. A few flakes fell again on Tuesday.
