Momentum appears to be gaining for Northport to become the first municipality in Leelanau County to allow medical- marijuana facilities. At its regular meeting Oct. 3, Northport Village Council approved scheduling a special meeting for 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Leelanau Township Fire Department’s fire hall to consider voting on a medical-marijuana opt-in ordinance.
*** County Clerk Michelle Crocker and the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners appear to be at odds with Sheriff Mike Borkovich about funding for a program the sheriff instituted earlier this year to recognize citizens for doing good deeds. The county board last month declined to pay a roughly $500 bill for “tokens” the sheriff ’s office bought that were to be presented to citizens who may have exhibited extraordinary acts of kindness or community service such as rendering aid at an accident scene or assisting during an investigation.

Sugar Loaf Resort may be sold at a “sheriff’s auction” slated for Nov. 21 at the Leelanau County Government Center. If the sale goes forward as scheduled, the long-shuttered ski resort could be purchased for as little as $1.3 million — the amount owed on a mortgage held by Talmer Bank & Trust of Southfield, Mich. A current real estate listing indicates Sugar Loaf’s owner is offering the resort for sale for $8.7 million.
*** The number of students in the four public districts located entirely within Leelanau County has crept up from the state-mandated count taken a year ago. Across the county there are 1,927 students in the four districts — 36 more than the 1,891 that were counted one year ago. And with 57 kindergarteners in Leland, the school now has three classrooms for its youngest set.

Northport School is asking 1,900 registered voters to decide a 2-mill, 16-year bond that would raise $5 million to pay for largescale improvements and additions to the school. Bond passage would carry a bonus: a privately-funded, 450-seat community arts center being coordinated through the Leelanau Township Foundation.
*** The management company that ran Sugar Loaf Resort until earlier this year has filed for bankruptcy, listing $700,000$800,000 in unpaid bills owed to 107 creditors.

Holders of lifetime leases on property which they sold to the National Park Service for inclusion in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will have to pay property taxes on the property. That was the ruling fo Attorney General Frank Kelly as reported to the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners Tuesday by James Williams, Leelanau County Prosecuting Attorney.
*** Marcia Larson, 21, of Northport was transported to Munson Medical Center Wednesday morning for treatment of a broken leg and possible shock by members of the Cedar Rescue squad after she was found at 7 a.m. by a passing motorist. Here car had gone off County Road 651 north of Gatzke Road in Centerville Township several hours earlier.

The Leelanau county board of supervisors will assemble at the courthouse in Leland Monday for their October meeting, one of the chief purposes of which is . to draw up a budget for the next year. Last year’s figure was $67,405 and County Clerk Elmer Dalton believes the board has stayed within that estimate.
*** Car accidents, of varying degrees of seriousness, were featured this week. En route to Lansing last Wednesday, County Treasurer Everett DeLong was hit at an intersection six miles north of St. Johns by a small delivery truck. With Mr. DeLong and bound with him to a Cherry Growers’ meeting, was David Murray of Traverse City. Mr. DeLong was proceeding through the intersection when the j truck suddenly turned directly in front of him. His car, a Kaiser, was badly damaged. Neither he nor Mr. Murray was injured and they returned home the same day.
100 YEARS AGO October 9, 1924
Two disastrous fine visited our village over the weekend, completely destroying the hotel Riverside Inn and the Prause garage. The loss on the two buildings was over $20,000 The hotel furniture on two floors was saved. The Prause garage fire occurred about 2 o’clock Monday morning, a Studebaker and Maxwell car were burned as nothing was saved. The loss is about $2,000.
*** Otto Schwarz and family motored to Green Bay, Wisconsin last week where they will visit the relatives and friends for a few weeks.
