There were far too many reasons for Leelanau County residents to fly their flags at halfmast this week.

Dean Robb, a well-known civil rights lawyer and longtime Suttons Bay resident, died Dec. 2 at the age of 94.

George Weeks, a nationallyrecognized columnist and longtime Glen Arbor resident, died Nov. 30 at the age of 86.

Bernard Rink, a Bingham Township resident and pioneer of Leelanau County’s wine industry, died Nov. 29 at the age of 92. *** Local units of government throughout Leelanau appear to be eager to “opt out” of allowing commercial marijuana related establishments and marijuana facilities anywhere near them.

Following voter approval of the legalization of recreational marijuana in Michigan last month, local cities, villages and townships are considering whether they will allow people to go into business producing, processing, transporting or selling pot on a commercial basis.

Organizers of the annual Toys for Tots campaign in Leelanau County say they’re concerned that the county’s neediest children may not receive Christmas presents unless more residents step up and donate toys. *** Meet Frederick L. Stackable, who will soon accept a position that a judge compares to the probate equivalent of the county’s Maytag repairman.

Stackable will soon add a new title — and that’s about all the position amounts to, he readily admits — to his long list of offices held, that of Leelanau County Public Administrator.

An event that’s become a holiday tradition in Leland over the past decade is crumbling.

The annual cookie sale at the Immanuel Lutheran Church will conclude Saturday. The church’s Ladies Aid Society is calling it quits for the fund raiser after 11 years. *** Continued participation by Leelanau County in the Northwestern Regional Airport Commission (NRAC) appears “ready for take off,” despite earlier wrangling over the issue.

The county will also likely pay far less for a voice in operations at the airport, which has become self-sufficient in recent years. Leelanau contributed between $15,000 and $16,000 annually to the NRAC until this year - when no request for funding was made.

“Fishtown” as Leland Harbor area has long been known, may be officially designated as a National Historic Site and formal application has been made by the Michigan History Division, Lansing, for inclusion of Fishtown in the National Register of Historic Records. *** Work is currently proceeding on repair, painting and some renovation of the Lighthouse building at Northport Point which until recently housed two U.S. Coast Guard families but which has now been vacated by the Coast Guard.

Plans for construction of a church in Glen Arbor Township were announced this week by the Christian Science Society of that neighborhood. *** Anthony L. Garvin of Cedar has been named by the selective service board as the man who will fill Leelanau County’s draft quota for this month. Garvin will go December 16 to Traverse City for induction.

Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Selby and family, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. McCormick and son William were Thanksgiving guests of Mr. and Mrs. Treat at Empire. *** Mrs. Oscar Price spent Monday shopping in Traverse City. *** There will be a Christmas Bazaar at the Leland school house, Friday afternoon, Dec. 14th. A fine assortment of Christmas goods, including imported Japanese novelties.
